Did you catch the shunt at the start of the Whitsun race?

I've watched Nick Mason enjoy his classic racing for years now, and this is about the only time I can remember him winning a big race solo.

It was really good to see and couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke - and genuine car-nut.

From the start line a car (red, so might have been a Ferrari, but I'm not sure) went from the left hand side over to the right and onto the grass, taking out 2 more on the way across.

He didn't hit anything and got back into the race (I think he stopped after a few laps?) and half the race was run under the safety car.

It was the #18 Lola T70 Spider. It suddenly turned right at the start collecting J. Folch's Ford GT40 and the Lola T70 of Paul Knapfield. The #18 car had some damage to the side but was able to continue the race.

Saw the crash yesterday, not sure what happened?, maybe spun the tires - those cars have so much power.

One one of my favourite cars in the world - a Minisprint. Ever so rare and worth a fortune.

this belongs to a mate of mine, i drove it there, then had to 'lend' it back to him as his modern alfa blew its clutch up on the way down on saturday - he then had to drive the mini sprint back to yorkshire during sunday to be able to catch a flight at 6am monday morning.

it runs a sweet 1071cc engine and is a joy to drive

Ah thanks.
Very unusual to see one that's not de-seamed and without rectangular headlights. Do you know how the conversion came about?

it is deseamed (but it does have the bumper seams and bumpers), the rectangular lights only really appeared in the later 1960s on the lower chopped cars (this one is 1 3/4 from the pillers, 1 3/4 from the body) that had a 2" body chop. they needed the square lights as it made the beam pattern legal (with the round lights the bulbs sat to high for the rules as they where) & it was a fancy conversion on normal height cars

this is actually a fresh built car, the body was converted last year by neville tricket, the guy who did them originally in the 1960's - have a look at his site for a full story of the development.

the cars owner wanted it to look just like a period early 1960s sprint, so bumpers and no wheel spats etc, rather than the more race derived later cars

glad you like it

I thought it was the #19 car that lost it. Anyway it ended messy for some that's true frown

Yes I thought it was Paul Knapfield’s Lola (car 19) that snapped right too, pushing Joachin’s GT40 (car 11) into the Lola of Mike Bailey (car 18). Car 19 only sustained light damage and went on to finish eighth, whilst the other two had to be recovered under yellow flags. I was stood chatting to the Ford guys as it happened and saw the damage as they were brought into the assembly area. I think the Ford came off worse with the damage on the Lola looking pretty light. It was such a shame as Joachin’s was a really nice example. Still it wasn’t as bad as what happened to Adrian Newey’s at Le Mans Classic and that’s been repaired. It was good to see that back racing.

But the difference here is that they didn't have to spend an age sweeping up 'carbon' shards from the circuit like they did at LM Classic after Newey's shunt!

It was a shame to see, but I suspect the T70 stepped out of line on cold tyres and nothing more.

Looking at the footage on ITV4 tonight you are exactly right , I thought the red Lola may have been pushed around but it turned sharp right on its own steam - cold tyres with 500 bhp spells danger I guess.
