Craig Doyle and Natalie Pinkham present the 2009 Goodwood Revival, the world's most popular historic race meeting. Sir Stirling Moss celebrates his 80th birthday in style among his many racing friends and most ardent fans. NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin flies in to be a special guest judge for the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation. And we mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic Mini, with a special appearance by Mr Bean. The climax of the weekend will be the running of the RAC Tourist Trophy.

Humm, so not much mention of motor racing then, sounds more about the celebrities than the cars... rolleyes

If the Festival of Speed coverage is anything to go on, then unfortunately yes.

We feel that those who enjoy the racing would either have come along to the event or will purchase the DVD when its released at Christmas. The programme next week is used to showcase Goodwood and our events to create a greater awareness of Goodwood to those who are not into Classic Motorsport as we feel anyone who is into historic racing knows about Revival by now..

You don't have to watch it!

Cheers,
J

I don't have to watch it, no, but I want to!

And there are plenty of us who know about it, but don't necessarily have the opportunity to attend.

While I understand your point, with respect, I don't think it makes sense. That's like saying if I'm into Formula One, I'll either attend all the races in person or wait for the season review at the end of the year.

I get that the celeb aspect is interesting to a wide range of viewers, and I have no problem with that. But if the Revival is as popular as the ITV listing suggests, then surely it's worth actually giving some comprehensive coverage? Isle of Man TT got a whole week of coverage (which was great, incidentally).

With respect jgoodwood there is a recession going on in this country. My husband lost his job at Christmas so our hobbies have been put on hold and due to cancer and its side effects I am unable to work. We were very upset not being able to attend the Revival. So your comments are way out of order.

Oh come on... don't be so sensitive James, all we're saying is that the production of the FoS TV programme lacked a bit of action so we hope the Revival one fouses on the cars! Of course we'll watch the programme and enjoy it, well most of it wink

Its a 1 hour programme with commercial breaks that needs to convey the atmosphere and all the other activites to a general audience.

50 minutes (excl ads, titles etc) is never going to be long enough to show racing highlights from Sunday let alone the whole weekend. The fact the presenters are Z list as far as motorsport counts should also point to the likely content balance.

It has always been a weak programme if you expect to see swathes of racing activity. If only between 3 & 5 minutes were allocated per race you still wouldn't have enough time. Several years ago Meridien used to cover it a little better with 2 x 1 hour programmes a week apart IIRC fronted by Murray Walker - but it was only on Meridien.........

This isn't a criticism of JGoodwood as I understand that the programme has to be made to appeal to a wider audience and achieve viewing figures to realise advertising revenue, public awareness etc, but the tone could have more rounded perhaps.

If ITV4 want to achieve their ideal of being the "UK Motorsport" channel then perhaps they should consider ( and Goodwood allowing / licensing) covering maybe the entire RAC TT or Whitsun Trophy races live, and then do the glamour magazine programme later.

So, just ITV doing free advertorial puff for Goodwood then? And if we want to watch TV coverage of this sporting event, we can pay for the privelege by buying a DVD?

A bit like having to pay £12 for a glossy advertising brochure just to find out the race timetable for the day, eh?

If that dreadful woman squawking Rule Britannia gets any TV airtime, my boot will go through the screen..
