The GRRC has a 90 odd percent retention this year, so i guess they must be at least pleasing some of the people some of the time thumbup
Which would mean 500 new members this year (?) I am sure there'll be no trouble in filling these spaces.
They don't need to take notice of the few.
With the popularity of the events, the term 'The right crowd with no crowding' surely doesn't apply anymore?
Maybe this is what the GRRC are trying to achieve.
But how many people of this '90 odd percent' are original members from back over 10 years ago when the club was started?. how many stay as members hoping for the club to offer a little more?.(not wanting to drop out of the club because of the 2 year waiting list). just look at the half price programme offer ,why did this offer take over 10 years to be given to members and just look how well it was welcomed by members too, from the large queues at the revival and festival Grrc members marquees !
I have attended all but one of the Festivals and Revivals. Right from the days when the only trackside barrier was a single row of hay bales and a strip of 'Castrol' tape and you could actually see the track!
I was a member back in the mid nineties when the club was first established (perhaps under a different guise). The membership including access to the Kinrara enclosure was, I think £80. This included access to the FOS for all three days. The Revival didn't exist and there were no exotic trips. I had less of an income in those days but felt as though I had good value for money. The basic membership fee now is not good value. You may as well buy tickets or get the free Friday tickets through the press.
The GRRC facilities seem no less busy than the regular facilities. I've always had to wait for a table.
There must be members from a variety of different backgrounds and incomes so why are they not all catered for?
Regardless of whether or not I can afford the exotic trips,I cannot justify them to my wife and young family who do not share my passion.
Change happens and you can't keep harping on about the old days. Hopefully things WILL change for the better.

Well for racinggreen and richB they may have read my 'little rant' on the goodwood members website forum. I have now left the GRRC, and will not be renewing for 2010. This is what i wrote on the GRRC members forum for all you people out there thinking of joining this 'club'. also New members have to pay a 'joining fee' plus the years fee too .so your first year will cost you over £260.00 !

I Really feel rather sad that this ' Club ' seems to be more aimed at people as member 'debbie' quotes : people that want the 'see and be seen'. (i feel just like debbie and many other members too..it seems the GRRC is more like a eilte country club for some people and a club for those members with great cars and plenty of time and money), Rather than a car club and goodwood event enthusiasts club for ALL people!

Look. i understand there are some very good points to being a member, the members 'perks' for the revival are good..(paddock pass ,lavant bank parking (well this is ok if you have a pre 1966 car!!), advance tickets for the main revival grandstands and the forward members parking at the festival and revival can be good too (if you park in the right car park!., BUT here be the problems.

1. Members discount on tickets is rather poor (you get a better deal on tickets buying from the local news papers).

2. Members Balls at goodwood house . (yes i be sure being allowed to buy tickets to the members balls is a fantastic idea for this great events)...But how many members are really wanting to attend this events? and being a member that does not want to attend this events, i am just blocking out non members that would love to attend this events !!

3. Very little extras offered to members who attend the festival of speed ( yes i know there is the 'kinrara enclosure'.. but anyone can pay 'extra' and go in one of hospitality tents offered by goodwood and still get all the 'extras' offered in the kinrara enclosure.

4.Goodwood house 'summer members open day' (this event is open to all members of the public)

5.Members marquee at all events (Nothing is 'free' or offered any cheaper to members inside this areas)..well apart from the 'half price programme' and use of lockers?..Not even free tea or coffee ,just something to make members feel welcome)

6.'Special promotions' on goodwood merchandise (well thats one discount voucher to use once ,.on a very limted range of goods that goodwood have to offer !!.

7 'private tracks days at goodwood motor circuit' (any member of the public can book a track day with goodwood motor circuit !)

8. Exclusive Driving holidays (Great idea for members with great cars and plenty of time and money to attend this events..But what about events and driving days for the more financialy challenged members ?)

9. Members 'car sticker' this gets your forward parking at the revival and festival (again this is really not great for parking at the revival and only worth while if you park in Car park M at the festival and a complete joke to call it 'forward parking' if you park in car park A !! . And No members parking or anything in Any way for the breakfast clubs !!)

10.'Goodwood members website' a very poorly promoted item by the goodwood estate..very poor number of members using it too!! (makes me wonder why i have typed this long rant of a response really [8-)].. and james will only come on saying that the club is so bloody great !!..Do goodwood care?.. nope because this club is a Big Cash cow with plenty of people willing to join with more money than sense!

11. 'goodwood members sprint event' (event is open to All members of the public to spectate).and again only good If you own a Track spec car if you want to take part!

So There you have it ! Some good things about being a member and plenty of bad things too !

My Idea for the Club.. SPLIT the club in two ! one Club for members with the nice cars and plenty of money and love the 'elite image' of being apart of goodwood..

And one for us people that own and Love (or just love) Great cars and bikes and really enjoy being at the Goodwood revival ,festival and going to track days, to see all great cars and start drivers out in action and be with fellow people with the same real intrest in what goodwod really as to offer !
You dont need to be a member of some pompous club to get into the main paddock at the Revival, I have got into the main paddock for the last 7 years,I ahve known some of the guys who race there, they have borrowed me there passes to get in, I was given a pass last year, and I have borrowed passes the other years to get in, its only a peice of cardboard on a bit of string !!! LOL !

I go to other historic events in the UK,and I dont need a pompous piece of cardboard to get into any other paddock !!!!!!!!!!

With all the money you have saved on this years membership, you owe me a pint !

Of course any member of the public can book a track day,Lord Greedy would not turn down £250.00 for someone to race there pride and joy around his track.

As for the breakfast club, how many people pay £13.00 for a breakfast ?

Err..RichB was this comment aimed at me? Because that 'long rant' of mine was posted before christmas on both pistonheads and the Grrc forum. that post along with many other posts from other unhappy grrc members(inculding yourself) Which as you well know, lead to the meeting that you attended!.
My comments are Not a 'animosity' towards goodwood events, Just the Grrc!.tongue out

No, richebets, it isn't! Here's an extract from my reply to James MacNaughton (aka "jgoodwood" after admonishment for my comments on quite the most preposterous, ill-infomed post I have ever read in any motor club media.

"..........There is a preponderance of similar totally clueless members who appear to have no knowlege of, or interest in, the historic car movement. They presumably join under the mistaken belief that it gives them some unjustified status by being part of the "Goodwood Set" when in reality I suspect they are perceived as forelock-tugging oiks paying through the nose for little or no advantages over the general public. Clever marketing by Goodwood I will grant you, nothing appeals like snob appeal!

I want no part of it and have not re-newed, so am no longer a member, end of story. Keep watching Pistonheads.........."

Mogburner, it's very poor show to bring an argument here knowing that the person who started the thread on the GRRC forum does not frequent Pistonheads and so will be unable to reply. If you've left the GRRC fair enough, that's the end of it.

personally I have learnt lessons in life by listening to those more knowledgeable and in turn by being tolerant of those who want to learn from me. In contrast I expect your aggressive, almost arrogant style will be at home here on Pistonheads, welcome.

RichB Good luck to you if you want to fork out £160.00 to be a member of Lord Greedy`s club, you have obviously got more money than sense, I will see you in the main paddock with my borrowed paddock pass and cheap entry tickets that I will buy to get in. I do hope you dont choke on Lord Marches "hospitality"........

So because I am not a member of the "club" dont pay £13.00 for a breakfast and dont shell out £250.00 to take my car around the track means that I dont like the place, does it ?

I go there for the motorsport, nothing else,it wouldn`t bother me if the "club" didn`t exist, I am more than happy to take my own food when going for a day out also.

Look, you save your money where you can and I'll spend mine how I please, leave Mogburner out of this that's a different issue, I take exception to you being so blatantly dismissive of the person who resurrected the track you enjoy going to, that's all.

@richebets Reply from James? Oh, I got the the mandatory riposte of the lackey scrivener! Essentially I was a cad and a bounder and was most likely responsible for bringing on an attack of His Lordsip's gout and should jolly well watch my tongue in future! RAOTFLMAO!

@RichB Not so. My post referred to the GRRC membership and "a" Forum post. Merely an illustration of the symptomatic toadyism rife in the Club and ill-(or non-) informed people who make up most of the membership. No specific member was identified. Thank you for your ironic welcome, but I have been a PH regular for some time. Not, of course, in your league with your 13,000+ posts. At 5 minutes a post that's nearly ten days of solid posting. I'd spend more time driving your Classic Aston, much more rewarding I would have thought smile

I started the thread on the GRRC forum that unfortunately seems to have upset Mogburner so much. I responded to his comments there and have no intention on repeating it all here.

I was simply asking for some help in identifying a particular car at last year's Revival. Another member posted a couple of ideas, and then posted again with what turned out to be the right car. Mogburner was astounded that members of the GRRC would not instantly know the car in question - and the tone of his post was patronising and offensive.

I am not "clueless" about historic racing and did not join the GRRC to be part of a "Goodwood set" or simply 'to be seen'. (I've been a member for almost 10 years and joined because of a life-long love of motorsport and wanting to support two fantastic events. If he'd read my posts there, Mogburner would know this.)

On the GRRC forum, many members have expressed concerns about membership (e.g. cost versus benefits) and certain aspects of the events themselves - and I have been one of that very vocal bunch, and Mogburner should be very well aware of that.

GRRC members are an eclectic bunch from different age groups and backgrounds. We cannot all know everything about all cars.

I don't very often visit Pistonheads but have registered this evening so that I can publically respond to Mogburner's accusations. I shan't be posting anything further on this matter.

Indeed doesn't time fly, I remember when it was all fields round 'ere wink I once read that when you are a kid you keep asking 'why' and you learn from those willing to help. You should never stop asking why but correspondingly never look down on others who want to learn. I love debates about whether the HD needle is preferable to the FS on the 1" 3/4 carbs when running the 240 degree overlap cam on the 2.9 or if it's simply better to ditch the lot for Webbers, but how did we all learn? Anyway I'll remember you words and get out in the Aston more and spend less time on Pistonheads. See you all at the Breakfast club next Sunday? scratchchinlaugh

Jane, it was not the fact that you did not recognise the "White Riley" which caused me such incredulity but the fact that you did not recognise it even as a Riley! Even if you had never seen one before (!) you could at least have read the rather prominent badge on the radiator! One can only assume you scuttled round the paddock snapping everything in sight in your haste to get your Flikr site updated. That would have been worthy of a gentle chauvinistic chide. When other "erudite" members suggested that it might be an Invicta or Alfa Romeo (!!!!!) my eyes nearly popped out of my head, hence my, not withdrawn, use of the word "numpties"

RichB: Good idea, no hard feelings here. Anyone who went to school with a rock-star hero of mine cannot be anything but envied!
