Looked like rain so as I'd cleaned my best bike with the bars on, I rode in on the CX bike, fitted with knobly tyres and race mud. Still managed to do over 20mph average biggrin. POWER BAZOOKA!

Wearing a PH jersey of course wink

Two Weetabix to resurrect an old theme.

Ho hum. In bed for a snooze before the first night shift. Hope it's not windy when I get up or I might wimp out.
Headwind all the way for me yesterday. Because I'm close to the coast it is usually but the sea breeze shift in the morning so I have a headwind in the morning as well. This morning I smashed my old record time by over two minutes but due to the near gale force tail wind the time doesn't count. wink

I was looking at aerodynamic options before my off. Now I'm using a rucksack again instead of panniers my times have been better than before. I'll not use triathlon bars until my arm is healed. Thankfully we've not had the crappy hot summer yet so I've not melted yet.
Yey, didnt wimp out. Knee is feeling much better these days too.

Keeping up my plan to cycle on night shifts is working, but been lucky. The really bad weather happens on my days off...... err.... hum frown

Best morning weather of the year today in my opinion. Was around 17-18 degrees when I left at 0620. Clear blue skies, sun was shining.... Utterly magnificent.

This, got chatting to a bloke on the fens for about twenty minutes as we rode along together. It's days like this that make it all worth while...

Porridge with raisins.

I can always tell when summer has finally arrived, I get angry at more cyclists than drivers on my commute to work. There were at least 4 Sunday Cyclists today with complete disregard for their own safety.

However, I did thoroughly enjoy zooming past a chap head to toe in Rapha on a carbon road bike whilst I was on my 10yr old steel hardtail with nobblies. Although he did get me back good and proper by running a red light at a pedestrian crossing at about 20mph while a mum and small child were crossing - knob!

Last night I got home and the wife and kids were waiting outside the garage with the hose-pipe and a massive set of grins on their faces. They let me put the bike and my wallet and phone to one side before properly hosing me down. It was bliss.

They also "pushed" me into the paddling pool when I went into the garden, which was as warm as a bath, and full of grass, sand, sun cream, toddler pee and Duplo men. This was slightly less pleasant, but only a little.

Gorgeous this morning too, (porridge with protein powder.)

So hot yesterday I let five psi out of my tyres and my water was warm by the time I got to work. rolleyes

This morning was marginally better but the sea breeze had kicked in and it was just as well I wasn't in any kind of hurry. Warm shower when I got home followed by a cold blast and I was ready for bed a good few hours before I could settle.

I am a Winter rider and this thirty something degree heat is just crap. I go fast enough for the wind cool me a little, any faster and I sweat buckets and stink. The reason being this time of year there is a lot more airborne dust and it's closer to body temperature.

Nothing wrong with dust but it isn't just dust.

Anything that leaks from vehicles, sulfuric acid, petrol, diesel, oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, water, coolant, washer fluid, asbestos brake dust, rust, tyre rubber and grease.

Anything that had been on the road, animal urine, animal faeces, fur, feathers, blood, saliva, bile, soft tissue, ground hard tissue, insects/insects matter/waste and other parts associated with death.

Human waste fly tipped from vehicles, food, drinks, nappies, urine, faeces and various fast food establishment packaging and tobacco products.

Chemical over spray from farm land, pesticides, herbicides, manure, growth hormone, organic and in-organic materials.

Some miscellaneous stuff like, ash from bonfires/barbecues/other fire souses, rotten bio-matter from deciduous trees, cut grass/verges and so on.

Why the list and why is it more of an issue this time of year? Well as it's closer to body temperature any bacteria or spores in the dust will survive longer. Long enough to make contact with us as we ride through it. Due to the increased amount of sweat on our bodies also due to the heat surface tension means more of this compound of matter sticks to us. Our bodies react to bacteria on the skin by producing more acidic sweat and body odor is the net result.

If you do not have shower facilities at work consider taking the bus instead. Just don't bio-test the seats or handles as you are sat in a cocoon filled with thousands of peoples dry skin flakes, urine, sweat, blood, pus, vomit, digested food, faeces and you have to walk through the dust cloud to get to the bus stop anyway. wink

Comparing the health benefits of cycling compared to riding in a mobile petri dish or letting my tyres down so the heat from the road didn't cause a blow out?

Its a bit of heat, nowt more, not a biological bloody war

I can understand riders in central london and traffic fumes maybe, but plleeasee its riding a bike to work not military biological weapons testing

It's a blog format and mostly tongue in cheek.

I am well aware that all the stuff you find in dust is in what get sprayed from your and other road users tyres when it's wet so the weather is a non-issue.

Personally I prefer Winter. As for cycling to work in a bio-hazard suit it's there all the time and our bodies should be immune to it by now (although that could work a lot better than hi-viz). wink

I like fair weather riders. The bumper crop of second hand nearly new bikes for sale by late September for a fraction of the list price and for a while the roads are a little safer as they are back in their cars and remember what it's like on a bike. hehe
