Road bike wheels - I'm confused!
Discussion
Aaargh! Ksyrium Elites are now haunting me. I really want a set of these, but I currently have what is commonly known as a distinct lack of funds. Now I see them everywhere. Hanging in the local bike shop, photos in this thread, and today I cycled up to the Eelmoor end of the runway to watch the Farnborough Air Show, and there they were. Two guys on road bikes, one on a Boardman, wheels unknown, the other on a nice Bianchi with MY Ksyriums. Worst of all, I'm there on a beaten up MTB with a picnic in my Camelback, and the wife and son in tow. At that moment, all I wanted to do was to be out on my roadie, setting new PBs on my brand new Ksyrium Elites. Oh well. Back to the dreaming for now.

Can someone buy those superstar wheels...I need a guinea pig
How hard is it to build a wheel exactly, not doubting the skill but can the average joe with a some patience acheive it? Tempted to try my luck. Worst case send a twisted pile of half scrap to a wheelbuilder to complete?
I have two sets of their MTB wheels. One set is their race spec set which are very very light and so far no problems. The other is built on the same hubs but use stronger spokes and rims and are more of an AM wheel. How hard is it to build a wheel exactly, not doubting the skill but can the average joe with a some patience acheive it? Both were perfectly true out of the box - they're hand-built- and so far so good WRT reliability; no buckling or loose spokes, etc.
No, the game has moved on - the Ksyriums are pretty narrow, use a proprietary alloy spoke that is forever freezing in the nipple, and the freehub body self-destructs frequently.
If you want to go the cheap training wheel route get Archetypes on Novatec hubs, if you want cheap but actually aero get Flo30's, and if you want proper wheels get HED stinger 4's (go deeper the fewer hills you encounter).

Agree on the spoke issue, nut not had any problems with freehubs on Ksyriums. They are pretty much bombproof though and rarely need truing IME.TonyHetherington said:
No Shimano freehub option with that link - only Campagnolo, but if Campy is what you need, 32% saving sounds like a deal...Rocksteadyeddie said:

Someone either tell me its a pointless cost exercise and that they will feel little to no difference, or provide me with a better alternative for the money.
I dont ride to race, but I like riding quickly in and around the lanes and over the hills.
