The Wattage Thread

Well, my coach is 6.2 and heavy and does around 320 watts for a 10 and posted a 19 dead few months back...., like he said theres far more to racing than power. The pros train 30+ hours a week have the best kit/food/rest/meds and backup and good knows what else so don't compare. It's like club racers comparing themselves to F1 drivers, a bit silly really.

There's a lot of data out there for Griepel, seems to range from 1500-1850 peak. The numbers are only really made Impressive due to the fact they're at the end of 5 hours racing and probably 5 mins on the rivet. I say that because I know a few people including myself capable of hitting 1500, but only after a lot less riding!

Must have a good aero position to be posting a 19 at that wattage. superkartracer said:

if you can output 350 watts for an hour you'll be in the top 10 club riders in the UK...
Or back on planet Earth.... I know exactly the wattage I produce. I have a very good idea of what the guys I race with - including Okgo - produce. Both of our results are posted regularly on here, on British Cycling, and our own blogs. Rob is a very good rider but no where nr top 10 in the UK (yet). 350w might get you an Elite racing licence - of which there are over 200 in the UK (IIRC)
Your power figures are looking mighty impressive Rob! You planning on upping your power, losing some weight or both ?
I'm looking at renting a power tap for use over the winter so will post my results when I have them, I suspect I have a ok 1-10min but struggle with pacing longer efforts unless I'm forced to ride hard in a race etc

Well the aim is always to lose weight. But it's got quite difficult. I have an odd build, more like a track sprinter really. Should imagine 75-77 is best I can hope for. But yes up the power is the aim. Figure it should happen if I stick to tried and tested measures as thus far has just been me aimlessly riding about

Cav is rumoured to be at 1800w. I suspect someone like Griepel is more. The track boys will be higher than this, obviously.Mark Cavendish said:
“You’d be surprised at my watts,”
“Most people who say that their maximum is 1,600 watts won’t put out 1,600. My maximum is 1,580, and that is a lot. Not many guys will do more than a hundred more than that. But no one will ever get close to that in a race after 200 kilometres,” he continues.
“I put out 1,490 today in training, on bad form, but I won’t put that out in a race. It’s not watts, and it’s not just my frontal area in a sprint. It’s everything beforehand. How I ride in the peloton. My pedalling action. How I sit. I save so much energy for the finish.”

I'm talking about TT racing not road racing.
I stand by my assertion it would get you no where near the top 10 in the UK.If you can output 390 watts 20mins ( around 75kg ) it gives you around a 68 Vo2 or 2.20 ish marathon times.
VO2max = 12 * PTW + 3.3

To give you an idea how fit you need to be to push a 350 FTP.
SKR - ex runner and 70 + Vo2
Having the power/tools is one thing, having the mental strength to push to those limits is another thing all together and 90% of whats needed. You can't train for that.

I used to be 90+ kg bodybuilder and got down to 72kg so can be done dudeWe will see. I like eating
Also not sure how simple the maths are, I ride with a guy with a lab tested vo2 of 73, he's slower than me, and can only do 340 or so for 20 mins. And you can find a few big blokes who can get the power out but can't translate that into a properly fast time.
There are no hard and fast rules I don't think, so much of it is drag etc, and some people seem to defy that, a particular bloke with same first name as me seems to go very fast for a big guy for same watts as me, so it can be done, you can defy the figures both ways.
