The standing water is worse than the mud I find. Gets bloody everywhere.
Still, once you get dirty, it matters not. I also find that spray mud dries on your shins and keeps your legs warm!
I recently removed my rear crud catcher as fellow riders mocked me for having it. I kept the front one mind, but te rear doesn't seemed to have made much difference not having it.

Results of yesterday's night ride:
No point in taking any photos of the actual ride, because it was dark. Very dark.

How did you get on at the YouYangs on Sunday?
It's on the Yarra Trail - head across the bridge after riding alongside the freeway, then take the trails there - it's on a little fork to the right. How did you get on at the YouYangs on Sunday?
The You Yangs were actually a lot more fun this time around - we started at Stock Yards and rode that way rather than at the ranger station. Still not convinced on the downhills - at Lysterfield I ride everything, at the You Yangs the made made rock gardens seem pointless and make me walk!
Off up the Yarra again today - going to see if I can't get to Hans Loop!
40 miles in today with gears, which is unusal for me this time of year. Fancied something different. Racing Ralphs made it quite entertaining in the mud. Stopped, took the picture, road up the road to the top and realised I left my glasses on the wire fence. Doh !! Tried to keep the pace up to warm up, but failed completely and got home to thaw out. I even remembered a picture and how to get it off my phone !Then I realised why I singlespeed, as had to clean the bike and gears.
Lovely run out this morning on a loop North of Newcastle. Not huge distance compared to those shown above but still getting used to the Whyte and still building up my fitness levels. That'll take some doing but most importantly, I'm loving it.....
The bike needed a good clean afterwards... quite surprised how noisy disk brakes get when they're dirty though!

Paul, there is a nice MTB club out towards Forest Hall - http://www.midaircrisis.co.uk/ - they're a good bunch of guys and people of all abilities head along for rides. I only managed a couple of events with them before packing up and leaving the UK but they are worth getting in touch with!
Get off the fire-roads and onto some proper trails though, much more fun! There are loads of great trails near you if you know where to look - I originally hailed from the other end of town so would often be found at Chopwell woods, Keilder, Lake District, Dalby, Hamsterly... Never did manage to make it to Glentress though!

Cheers for that, i'll get my confidence up a little on the bike and then may look to get in touch with the Midaircrisis guys. I know Chopwell reasonably well, being ex Rowlands Gill the Derwent Walk, Waskerly Way, and Chopwell were all on the doorstep, all great fun.
