Fulking Escarpment. They've smoothed out some of the South Downs Way from the youth hostel towards Devils Dyke. The bogs in the dips have gone, and I didn't miss fighting my way through ankle deep mud/cow st but somehow it's wrong. I don't have a cx bike, so if I am off roading I want a bit more than a "rough" road. The climb up Fulking Escarpment is hard as ever though, with a spike of 36% according to my Strava

Looks great. I do own a CX bike that's made for the sort of terrain, would like to do the South Downs Way next year.
I'd fit the widest strongest tyres you can and accept you will get battered. The terrain in that photo is pretty smooth, there are sections that can shake your teeth out. I did the whole SDW in a day in 2010 on a Specialised Hard Rock. Would have given anything for a full susser - the only time I thought it would make a difference in 10 years of riding on the South Downs.A friend tried a Wiggle event that was meant to be perfect for cx bikes, but a flinty section around Bignor Hill shredded his tyres.

After watching my 15 year old daughter try to jump these, there's 3 jumps like this in a line, on her bike - my old Rocky Mountain XC hardtail, I let her have a go on mine.. cleared the lot
SEEEEEND! Nice work. I definitely think her riding warrants a decent bike!Blurred photo from the weekend's nonsense.

Convincing the wife might be harder! She made it look very easy and repeated it a good few times much to the amusement of the bystanders this was the first run on my bike

Here she is on the normal steed on one of the 4-5ft gaps
The boy was about too
He's getting frustrated that he can't build enough speed to clear the big tables he's close though
Fun afternoon out with them both

It is tough being small! In the group I ride with, one of the lads has tremendous technique and also carries a fair bit of extra timber. None of us can get across gaps with as little speed or run up - momentum is all.

My best mate is a roadie, but finally got a mountain bike last week, so took him to Cannock Chase and had such a good time. Riding is way more fun with friends!
Hi gents, just thought I'd ask as you've both just put photos of cannock up...
I'm heading out for a ride tomorrow and I'm torn between heading out sheffield/peaks way or down to cannock chase (never been before). Reasonably competent, unfit but looking to tire myself out. Is it worth heading down to cannock having never been before?

Cannock is a good place to have a spin around. The Follow the Dog trail is about 10km of solid easy-ish Red trail (light red?), while the Monkey trail adds 9 more km of more technical difficult Red trail riding to make a figure-8 style lap of almost 20k.
If you're feeling confident a full lap is a good leg work-out, no huge hills but a lot of shortish tough inclines. Or 2 laps of the Dog if you're not feeling massively confident on your first ride back.
I like it because it's less than an hour from Birmingham where I live. There are better rides in the Peaks no doubt, but it has a cafe, Some nice fun descents and is all clearly marked to make for a stress-free day. It'll not feel as wild as even the South Peaks, but the scenery is alright!
