Hi all

I'm signed up for an Everesting in a couple of months; we've picked a hill that is long and shallow-ish, so I'm not too daunted by all the climbing but it will be 20+ hours I think.

My current saddle is a Charge Spoon which is good, especially at the price, but I do get uncomfortable after about 4 hours of riding, so am looking for a good comfy perch for a long day's ride.

I have had a Specialized Body Fit, and that included trying a couple of Fizik saddles for a week. The Arione was murder for me, rock hard and after about an hour it had me feeling like I do after 4 hours on the Charge. I then tried an Alliante which was better but still not up to the Charge.

To complicate matters further, Would like to spend less than £100, it will be going on a Giant Propel which is new so don't want to be spending another huge amount of money. I will probably take both my old an new bike on the Everesting attempt to at least relieve the monotony if not my sit bones and quads.

The comfiest saddle I use is an SQ Lab.

It depends where you get uncomfortable though as that will help identify what you might need to look for in a new saddle.

Probably not the look you may be looking for, but I've got a Selle Italia Turbo on my old steel Peugeot and I can ride that all day.

If it's good enough pour le derrier de Bernard Hinault...

Charge spoon <> Madison Flux, which I use on mtbs for up to 12 hour rides. Madison Prime is their Road version from the look of things, cheap, might be worth a try. Mind you I use Aliante on road, so that just proves you can only find out the hard way I'm afraid, try lots and see what works.

Gotta be a Brooks, but wear it in first, obviously.

Isn't that what Charlie and Andy said?

Stop talking about unsightly, leathery arse-perches and let's concentrate on bike saddles.

Had a Brooks Swallow almost 50 years ago and it was the most comfortable saddle I ever sat on, so I decided to buy one a couple of years ago...They are not the same. The leather went out of shape quickly and started to sag, screw it tight and the same happened again, the saddle never felt comfortable and I had to change my seatpost for one with more layback. So it was moved on to someone who 'liked the retro look of it' rolleyes

I've got a Fizik Antares: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fizik-antares-v... on my roadie at the moment, and it seems great. Only done a 4 hour max at the moment, but seems better than the old bike which had a Selle Italia jobby.

My Brooks felt like my balls were being given a session with Graham Norton and a Broom handle , plus I even tried it for 4 months + (the saddle, not Norton) but never liked it

Personally, keep the saddle you have and buy the best & comfortable shorts you can

You may already do this but it's worth getting out of the saddle for a few seconds every so often, even if it's just to help the blood flow. This makes a big difference on longer rides.

Scratch that, just read some more of the in-depth reviews. While mine has the "relief channel", it appears it is made more for power and light weight than comfort.

The saddles that are best for my derrière and what I have on my bikes are Prologo Scratch Pro and Forza Cirrus, but everyone is different so suggest you try some before committing

Another vote for a Brooks, I don't even notice that my bike has a saddle these days, it's just a perch that's perfectly shaped to my arse.

What about trying the Fizik curve saddle, similar shape to your current spoon. I'm using a Sella Italia SLR TT on my Propel, plenty comfy for me all day.

OP, what flavour of Propel are your getting/got?

Edited, any excuse for a picture

Tricky one, saddles, as arses are such personal things.

SqLab seem to win all the magazine tests here in DE.

My personal favorite is my Brooks B-17, this is apparently an unacceptable choice, but thousands and thousands of Audax riders can't be (that) wrong.

Lovely looking thing Shuttle cock! Mine's this one -

Plenty of choice then! Would a Brooks saddle look ok on an aero bike? And how long do they take to break in? 1000km, less? And what happens if once you have broken it in, it doesn't feel comfortable?

Gruffy - I do that, usually happens more often the longer the ride goes on.

Twisting my Melon - will also be looking at shorts.

Slightly O/T, what's this beast like at climbing and all day rides? I much prefer aero frames but I'm concerned I'm sacrificing comfort for looks?
