Just started riding to work every day along gravel tracks and even though I'm using a dry lube ithe chain and sprockets are caked in dust after a week. I've got a chain cleaning thing which gets it spotless but it's a bit of a fag to do every week. I ride a retro Kona with period bits and don't really want to wear them out.

I don't clean it anymore since I moved to squirt lube, as that's it's main selling point. Seems to work really well, chain is quiet, wear rate is good, and far less mess than standard lubes.

I ride pretty much all conditions and surfaces, here's a couple of reviews.

(MTB) I tend to run it through a degreasing wipe after every ride and relube with MucOff C3 Dry (drop on each link then wipe off excess).

Every so often will remove it completely and put it in a pot with degreaser and give it a cocktail shake, then finsh in some soapy water. At the same time clean up the jocky wheels and maybe scrub the cassette.

Been contemplating a cheap ultrasonic cleaner as a pointless gadget.

Much like 'bigdom', I've switched to Squirt lube now.

I was given a sample-sized bottle (or three) at a race, and loved it.

Dust/dirt doesn't seem to stick to it, it cleans up with a stiff, dry brush, and you simply re-apply new lube onto old when you get back after a ride, and Hey Presto! It's ready to go again next time.

You just need to thoroughly de-grease the chain before first application, really. You shouldn't need to bother de-greasing again. To save you the bother of degreasing a new chain, you can get KMC chains pre-treated with Squirt lube too... https://www.squirtlube.com/products/coatedchain.ht... ...though not sure about a UK supplier/importer.

When I commuted (on roads) I did the opposite of the normal advice you tend to see. I found thick lube useless as it just attracted gunk. On any day when it was wet I sprayed liberally with a fine lube as soon as I got home to clear the water and grit off and ready the bike for the next day. Every few weeks I'd have a proper look at it and pick off any gunk that was still there.

My commute is really dusty and drys out lube quick

I just run the chain through some baby wipes , then a rag with gt40 lube and then another rag to dry off . Finally drop wet or dry line onto the links and wipe off excess . Will give the mech and chain rings a quick wipe.

The more you do it the less builds up , takes about 5 minutes once /twice a week depending on milage

Measured the chain and it's on the limit so ordered a KMC X8-99 and a bottle of Squirt.

Depends on where I've been riding (road bike) but normally once a month.
If I've got a large group ride coming up, I normally do it a day or two before that.
