I am looking at 10/12 year old CLKs.

My wife will have a 120 miles round trip to make twice a week for the next 18 months or so and I would like to get something for her to make the journey in to keep the miles off her SLK.
The engine will be 3 litre but should I go for the 3.2cdi or the petrol ?

Hi Greg

If it helps I've had a 2009 CLK350 petrol convertible for about a year, great car, responsive and comfortable. I do mainly town driving and station runs so average about 23mpg, although on a run I've seen 37 on the display, cruising at 70.

I'd reccomend the petrol, had a few merc saloons as company cars with the 350 diesel v6 - epic torque and real spaceship performance, but there is a lot to be said about the smoothness of the petrols which won me over for this one as I jumped off the company car scheme.

I have a CLK320cdi & it's a great car for putting the miles on, I average around 44-50mpg on a run 28 (central London)-36mpg (this was when it just had a Map) the CLK280/350 is smoother but they're also £520 road tax at which point I'd get a CLK500 as the fuel cost is almost identical, I'd also look for a Sport or the very rare Avantgarde Sport as the have the Orthopedic air seats as standard.

A Sunroof & Heated Leather are the choice options.

Not sure what your budget is but here are some options:

CLK320cdi Sport 68k

2009 Sport 55k

If you're going to get a petrol get a 55 plate or older to avoid the higher tax.

2005 CLK280 Sport

2005 CLK350 Sport

2005 CLK500 Sport

As you can see the fuel difference is a 1mpg across all three petrol models..

Thanks for that ZX10R NIN. And thanks for researching the marketplace. I'm afraid black is out for me as,living in the country, I need to wash the thing twice a week !

In reality there is a big difference between the petrol v6s and v8s in terms of mpg - especially the rocking horse feces 500 5.5.

350 the best compromise IMO. Havent driven a 280 but can imagine you;d feel a tad short changed with the performance.

just be careful and check the VIN - all v engines have balancer shaft issues before a certain VIN number that can be ruinous to fix. As a rule get as late as possible.

Mine is a sport and has every option except H&K - air seats which are cooled and heated included. Air support is nice, but I've yet to feel the benefit (or effect) of the cooled seat option at all, so wouldnt worry if it wasn't ticked.

The difference between a 350 & 500 is between 4-7mpg

It was in the case of mine, obviously it depends on driving style & the type of driving conditions.
