Just had 1st service on my Emonda and was a bit shocked but that’s what you get when you ride in all weathers. Only done circa 6000km

Picked up from house and dropped off my fixthebike in Marlborough.

Chain. 30.00
Cassette. 52.00
B pads. 16.00
Headset b. 45.00
Gear inner. 3.00
Bar tape. 18.00
Clean. 12.00
W true f/r. 25.00
Labour on p98.00
New cassette after 6000km? Bar tape £18? £98 labour? Seems excessive to me I would certainly expect my cassette to last a lot longer than 2 years.

Thats nothing, my mate took his S-Works Roubaix into his LBS after me telling him to by a £8 chain measuring tool.

He needed new DA chain, cassette, both front rings (I don't think they were that bad), bottom bracket bearings, headset and disk brakes looked at. Final bill was £450.

Mine only goes to LBS for bearing replacements in the BB and Headset and anything Di2 related (and hub services).

I think MTB's are far worst for servicing from memory!

I'm surprised the cassette lasted that long. I find myself changing mine at around 4,200 km, on average. I do it myself though. Cassettes generally around £30 and chains about £17 - I dropped down from Ultegra 11-speed to 105 11-speed to save a few pennies. Any weight increase wasn't noticeable.

The only thing mine would go in to an LBS for these days would be the press fit bottom bracket and headset bearings. Although I might be tempted to put it in for re-cabling next time it needs it, as that can be a fiddly pain, and no matter how much I try, I've never quite got the knack of indexing gears to shift perfectly. I've slowly but surely acquired the tools to do most jobs on the bike, but lack of a vice/workbench and garage space with electric light can be a pain, especially during winter and when the weather is bad. I have to set the work stand up on my driveway when the weather is good.

Labour sounds about right for a "Gold Service" (round these parts at least). That usually includes a complete strip-down, clean, frame inspection, polish up and rebuild/re-lube. I'm considering paying for one before the spring, just to have someone else cast an eye over the bike - just for peace of mind really after 10,000 miles including two Festive500s.

I just don’t have the time, what time I do have I want to be riding the thing.

In the grand scheme of things it’s a very cheap hobby compared to the Westfield Cosworth rebuild.....

That’s not to say I wouldn’t like to learn how to do it. Two kids under 3 and working away for what added up to nearly six months of the year last year makes that tough though.

I only take my bikes to a shop as a last resort when I've tried something and got stuck. I've built my confidence over the last couple of years to the point that I'll tackle most things. I've not had to cut a steerer yet and would be a bit scared of getting that wrong.

With three sons, I feel like I am investing a bit because I if they all have bikes that need servicing I'll be in for quite a bill if I don't do it myself. Also the ability to really understand how the thing is put together helps, you can give it that just serviced feeling whenever you want.

^^ you got properly bent over on that servicing, £98 labour for what was probably 2-3 hours work!
Agree with comments re cassette longevity too, I'd be expecting 8-10,000 km

My best bike has just clocked 4,000km and is running perfectly on all original ultegra parts.

Really?

How much do you work for per hour?

How much would you charge for another professional/tradesperson per hour?

What did your/your partner's last haircut cost per hour?

We all bemoan the loss of LBSes but the reality is they probably have to charge in that ballpark to be in with a shout of surviving.

I do pretty much all my own maintenance but would never decry someone for going to their LBS for work, even ostensibly simple stuff, or for the shop charging a realistic amount for it. I'd rather the shop was still around when I needed to buy something from them.

My LBS charges £92 for a full strip down service, by which they mean everything removed from frame, checked, greased and put back again. If I did it myself it'd take me a full day, after which I'd have to pay them £92 to repair the bits I'd broken/put back wrong/lost. Worth every penny.

I agree. Same as people with car servicing, you either know how to do/have the time or you don't.
£30 an hour (presumably incl VAT), given the shop needs to make profit and pay the mechanics wages isn't too bad IMHO.

I had them put a new chain and BB on my bike (and I bought the parts from them as well, rather than the cheaper online guys)

Sadly will never have bike worked on there again for 2 reasons

1) They changed the price up by a fiver between dropoff and pick up. They didn't say why, it was just suddenly more expensive (not the cost, its the principle, and I couldn't be bothered to argue, but it's lost them further work.)
2) They (well at least the 2 staff I dealt with) struggled to hide their sneering at my Giant TT bike on its training wheels. Apologies for not having a £10K Scott Plasma! rolleyes

It's a very strange shop at times. If you know what you want, no problems. (And they'll price match Wiggle/CRC/Evans if you ask) If you actually require help of the staff you can get frustrated at times. The guy who, when I enquired about a Giro Synthe, started to order it for me. Then sighed when I said I wanted to try it on first! Then they didn't have my size anyway and couldn't (be bothered to) get one sent over from their warehouse in Esher the same day. I would have bought but the attitude meant Evans got the sale the next day! The girl who tried more than a few times to get me to not buy the gels I liked, but to get another brand (that I didn't) despite my polite refusals.

The usual thing where you order a £500 Huub wetsuit and they don't bother to call and tell you its arrived!

Conversely, the old shop was a bit more hit than miss. Buying my first wetsuit the guy was brilliant and spent ages offering advice.

Expensive week for me- a pair of Rapha bib shorts for a bargain £55 thanks to a thread on here. And just ordered a Rivelo Softshell jacket, leg and arm warmers from Sport Pursuit. The jacket is down from £215 to £75.
In total I have spent £160 for about £450 RRP worth of kit. Bargain smile

I only get about 10,000km out of a cassette (Chorus) and I rotate three chains - first two down to their wear limit, third chain to double that, then the first two to again to double the wear limit. I suppose that's year-round commuting for you, constantly stop-starting and riding in filthy conditions.

I was nervous about this first time, but it's a question of being methodical. Measure, measure, then re-measure! (For mine I deliberately left the stem height more than I eventually wanted, but was building from scratch without a template bike and wanted to get a feel for the set-up before dropping the bars further.)

Then get a set of cheap (eg £5 Planet X) alloy spacer rings, to sellotape on in the required position and use as a sacrificial cutting template. A 32tpi hacksaw blade is easier than 24tpi - and even that will be pretty blunt after one cut of a steerer. Smooth off the cut with a fine carborundum stone. Don't breathe in the carbon dust - it's not healthy! Plenty of videos on YouTube.

As an aside, our LBS is offering bespoke 1-1 maintenance workshops at £60 ph. Customer specifies exactly what topics they want covered and brings in their own bike if desired to be shown how-to. Menu includes advanced stuff like wheel-truing, BB or headset replacement, tubeless tyre set-up etc.
