Shaved legs - what are the benefits?

Just to be clear- I dont think it makes you gay at all.
I think it makes you crazy if its purely for amateur cycling though. Sure, if you race for a team then fair enough or if your doing it for other personal reasons, or preference.
Do you expect sanity from someone who spends 20-30 hours a week training to finish mid pack in an amateur race?I think it makes you crazy if its purely for amateur cycling though. Sure, if you race for a team then fair enough or if your doing it for other personal reasons, or preference.

I dont expect sanity from any cyclist. To be honest....if I analyse cycling ...spending hours on our bikes, away from our families, in the rain, with hurting muscles, and tired bodies, getting beeped at by cars, wearing bright coloured lycra, getting flies in the mouth ....it all makes little sense at all. And yet...I cant stop. I have 2 cars....i can go anywhere much quicker in them. Instead i spend hours going round in a circle on a bike. Is this what its like being crazy? Hmmm...I still love it though.

You could say the same about any amateur sport though, and at least our sport only requires a bit of shaving and a spot of bum cream - not tearing up £50 notes and weeping, like amateur motorsportI've entered a parallel bloody universe. When I was in my teens and early twenties I rode thousands of miles at speed and not once did I think "wow, this is uncomfortable" beyond muscle ache. If you have to shave your legs or stick lubricating cream up your arse to avoid discomfort, there is something badly wrong with your clothing, your seat or your set up.

Nobody has to. For all reasons stated on this thread people do.Most pro's use chamois cream. Are they doing it wrong too?
ITV4 asked Cav about this in an interview on one of the Tour highlights programmes a few years back.
IIRC, his response was:
1. It's much less painful when dressings get pulled off.
2. You do NOT want to have repeated deep tissue massages on hairy legs.
3. You ABSOLUTELY do not want to get an in-growing hair follicle anywhere near the saddle contact area as a result of deep tissue massages.
4. You'd be nuts to shave your legs if you weren't a pro cyclist with lots of deep tissue massages and frequent crashes (especially where you've got to ride again the next day) an occupational hazard.
