I'm the same. Never been a massive Rapha fan, never bought anything from them. All of a sudden I'm looking at £64 for a pair of their bib shorts and thinking "that's hardly a tenner more than a set of Decathlon bib shorts - what's the catch?"

Anyway. I had a shower, and feel a whole lot less dirty now. But I have a question.

The Rapha sizing info for shorts/tights tells me that I am either too fat for my height, or too short for my waist size. A size 'S' would fit me nice on the waist, but likely be too long. An 'XS' sounds a better bet based on my inside leg measurement, but I'm not sure I'll be comfortable tucking my belly into a size 29.3" waist. Which is it better to compromise on? The choice seems to be either "too tight at the waist" or "too long in the leg". I'm in need of a decent pair of bib shorts now because a few of mine are looking decidedly 'long in the tooth', but budget is a primary consideration too. Oh, and I wear a 30" inside leg, 30" waist (with breathing space) in trousers at the moment. A lot of my cycling clobber is a bit loose these days as I've lost a fair bit of weight since I bought it all...

Thanks for that, desperately needed new shorts as my trusty DHB's have seen better days. Was going to replace with the same again but the Rapha bibs for 54 is an utter bargain, hopefully the snow has gone by the time they arrive!

I think you’ll be fine with a S. My inside leg is about an inch shorter than they recommend for the size I wear and I don’t find them too long.

as a collector of loads of rapha stuff i would rate the classic bibs as total crap. spend the extra few quid and get the pro team ones.

I've got Core and Lightweight ones, only ever tried the Classics on but wouldn't have said they are crap, the pad is nice, material is nice and they seem well cut, I would say they are slightly on the big size of cut though. My others are large and I felt the Classics in large were too big for me.

I don't actually like the Pro Team ones, the shoulder straps don't have enough give in them for me, way too short even in a riding position.

I don't know what to do now!

A size 'S' will fit fine, but the shorts are a bit crap.

I'm not disputing anyone else's definition of "a bit crap", but surely it's all relative? If you'd have seen some of the utter crap I've ended up wearing in the past, Rapha Classic Shorts don't seem like they could be all that bad. But I've no experience of the brand so I'm not sure how they'll compare with some of the cheap stuff (Aldi, Lidl, Sports Direct, et al) that I'm wearing at the moment.

I'd definitely not be buying Rapha for the brand image though. They'd need to be worth the £64/£54 price as is - what they were reduced from is of little interest to me as I'd never pay that much for a pair of shorts unless they came with a free Miss World contestant already wearing them...

They're worth it imo, worst that happens you get them try them on a few times but don't ride them and send them back for a refund if you're not 100% happy with them.

by a bit crap i mean there is not real cut or support to them, no change in fabric, airstrip , etc. to me they feel very cheap, like a pair of swimmers with a pad glued in.

Classics have been absolutely fine for me, yes the pro etc are better, but for all day comfort you definitely can't complain! For £54 it's a bargain.

They pay for themselves as soon as you've had an accident repaired which I have had a couple of times.

All Rapha Classic garments are covered by their 30 day guarantee as well, meaning you can use them and if not happy send them back for a refund.

Classics are a pretty old design now (hence why they were that price). The Classic II has been out for about a year now I think. Of all the Rapha ranges I'm also a fan of the ProTeam stuff though. The fit just works better for me as I need the height of a large but large in the other ranges can be close to a baggy round the waist these days. The ProTeam kit does seem to be nice quality and very comfortable too.

I have two pairs of Rapha Classic shorts and a merino tri-colour jersey.

All bought in the sales, never full price.

For someone a little “fuller” around the middle, XXL suit me fine and I’ve done a number of 100 milers wearing them with no detriment.

Strangely I’ve started to buy Castelli stuff, as I find the Rapha kit a bit “average” for the pricing level.

Their range seems to be ever increasing, chasing new niches to exploit.

Whilst their Classic stuff is Ok, I rate the Castelli kit more, for equal cost...

Has anyone who ordered received their items? I ordered a set of bib shorts and received a despatch email on Friday with tracking info. I tried tracking it today and appears Royal Mail have not got the item yet.
I called Rapha and the guy said he has no idea what is going on and that they can refund me if I want. I am beginning to think they were out of stock or don't want to honour the bargain price.

I ordered a pair of shorts on Thursday, got an email on Friday evening to say they'd been posted out and they arrived Monday. You'd think for £5 they at least use next-day delivery rather than a 48hr service, or is that classic 'Rapha tax'?

To give them credit, fit is very good and I'll be interested to see what comfort is like when I jump on a bike tomorrow evening.
