Anyone going to try the Rapha Festive 500 this year?
Discussion
If you see someone on a bright orange Specialized pedalling through the forest tomorrow looking very tired, that may be me!
Other than tomorrow, my other rides will be heading east out to West Chilington to my sister’s on Boxing Day (and then back the next day) followed by a trip to the in-laws’ in Chandlers Ford, which will require an unnecessarily circuitous route from my place in Warsash to get the miles in.
I reckon I’ll still end the Christmas holidays a couple of kilos heavier than I started it, despite the exercise. God only knows how much it would be if I did what I used to do and spent it on my arse.

It might be the last chance for a physical woven patch this year... https://www.rapha.cc/gb/en/stories/festive-500

HARD-EARNED
In a long-standing tradition of the #Festive500, everyone who finishes is eligible for a stitched roundel to compliment the one you might have earned on Strava. This year we will be rounding off a decade of delivering these prizes around the world so this is your last chance to earn a stitched one.
Has the challenge outgrown itself? Too many successful participants making the posting out of free badges too expensive for Rapha? In a long-standing tradition of the #Festive500, everyone who finishes is eligible for a stitched roundel to compliment the one you might have earned on Strava. Just back from a 65 mile ride. Kudos to anyone out riding in the South Glos area today - bloody windy!
Great effort! I managed 133km around Southampton and the New Forest today. There were a few exposed bits in the forest where I felt like I was going backwards because of the headwind. At least I had a nice tailwind for the return leg. The legs are feeling a bit tired so will get a rest tomorrow and then I’ll be back on it to tackle the South Downs on Boxing Day. Happy Christmas all!
I got the first 104 Kms out of the way today. I was going longer, but the weather and P* fairy meant I cut it short. It was windy, and it rained loads. The joys of riding at this time of the year.

It wasn’t anything like as slow as that was making out. I did stop a couple of times, once at the old bake house in Beaulieu, then at the pub on the way home.
The power meters are on the fritz again. It’s reading half power. There was a message on the Garmin screen about it, but I couldn’t read it. I think one of the pedals has got a flat battery.

I was just happy to get a ride in at all today. Managed 101 km on t'other side of the New Forest this afternoon. Wind was a bh, and there was plenty of rain and wet roads too. But great fun all the same...

...then a 200 mile round trip this evening in the car to fetch my son for Christmas dinner tomorrow.

I have managed ride baths Xmas eve and this morning, totalling 120km. Stunning morning today in Yorkshire, but the roads were absolutely treacherous (black ice). I couldn't tell what was wet and what was ice!
Had a car overtake me, and then turn right into a side street and understeer into the kerb! Do not touch the breaks. Hoping for no ice tomorrow morning for another quick spin to keep the mileage up.

Managed 42 miles this morning - weather was stunning just a shame it wasn't like that yesterday when I had more time!
Merry Christmas all!
Managed 50mi over Tuesday and Wednesday. Was due to put in 100 today but the weather and wind in South Glos today means probably just a shorter ride this afternoon. Long ride rescheduled for tomorrow, going to ride down to Rapha Archive at Shepton Mallet for a cuppa and cake for £2 😁. Merry Christmas all!
That was supposed to be much longer. The weather was so bad that the roads had deeper water than the Itchen. Without an outboard motor and a keel, I wasn’t going to get much further, so I called it off. The next few day’s weather look more promising, so I’ll get at least 1 of the 160 Km rides done ( hopefully).
Every single bit of tech on my bike, st itself simultaneously today. The Garmin ( which was charged 100 percent yesterday ) suddenly discharged itself, for no good reason. I managed to rig up a charge bank, to give me enough juice to get the ride done. The power meter pedals were just about out of battery ( as I thought ) so I changed them. Unfortunately the new batteries were just as dead, and I lost my power and cadence readings after about 2 miles. I did get round okay though, another 59 miles done. Another couple of reasonable length rides should do it, and the weather looks agreeable as well.

I'm 60% complete now, after a 200 km ride today. Grotty weather, almost constant drizzle, visibility down to 6 feet in places, a nasty puncture when I failed to spot a pothole in the dark, and a chat with a lovely young police woman. It was all going on. Even managed to include Gold Hill in Shaftesbury to tick off one of the 100 Climbs too.
The chat with the police was the most amusing. Some idiot in a Micra took exception to me being in the right turn lane at a roundabout, so tried to get alongside me and force me over to the left. Having no horn, I gave his passenger door a bang to "warn him off". So he pulled over a passing police car.
She pulled me over about half a mile later. I explained what had happened, and 'Vince' turned out to be a security guard (he told us as much, grabbing his yellow logo'd body-warmer between thumb and forefinger to emphasise the point). I think he thought it would make his version of events somehow more important than mine. He also told us that he been "driving for 20 years". He was stunned to learn that a cyclist had been driving a lot longer than him.
Comically, though, every time he opened his mouth he said something that made his situation worse. To say he was "a bit thick" would be putting it very mildly. He saw nothing wrong with admitting to using his car to force me to the left when I was signalling to turn right, complaining that I'd been "in the middle of the road". I needn't have worried. The nice WPC told him to keep quiet and step away while she "dealt with me" and she took me aside and told me to be on my way. Meanwhile, with his car blocked in by her car, 'Vince' could go nowhere, and he was still getting a "talking to" when I turned the corner and lost sight of him. 'Vince' was top entertainment though. Body like Johnny Vegas, the brains of Worzel Gummidge, and an unshakeable belief that because he was a security guard it was his job to police the roads too. Larf? I very nearly wet myself as the concept of leaving 1.5 metres and waiting until AFTER the roundabout to overtake a cyclist was patiently explained to him by one of Dorset's finest...
