I paid GBP 5,500 for one of these bikes in 2014 (super six evo red). why are you giving it away so cheap??
Yours was a hi-mod without st wheels?

(I own a non high mod that came with st wheels)
At £5500 I'd expect it to come with at least four wheels and ideally some kind of internal combustion engine!

Forgot to mention that, before we sounded the alarm for the actual potential buyer, I had a very polite chap sending me WhatsApp messages asking for details about the bike. More pictures, how long had I had it, etc. +48 code on the phone number but I didn't let it bother me, lots of European expats over here and not all of them will have UK SIM cards.

"Are you local then?" I ask.
"No, I live in Poland"
"So how are you going to collect it?"
"I'll send a courier. I have done this before"
"OK, but if you do that I'll need payment up front by PayPal"
"Come on, why do you want to pay eBay and Paypal fees?"

... so that you don't steal my bike, I think....

"I'm happy to pay fees for a smooth transaction."
"No, courier will hand over cash for the bike instead"

... will he indeed? I bet Parcel Pete always carrys 700 groats on him in cash.

Needless to say, after I insisted on payment through the proper channels he stopped responding.

I bought a SL4 S Works Tarmac advertised on ebay, visited the seller at Cycleworks in Haselmere (Ben Marks)

Viewed it at his work, explained it was a warranty replacement and we agreed on £1k cash if he took it of ebay.

No problems at all and I had the security of checking his story, I suppose he was a sensible seller and I was a serious buyer.

Main issue with these second hand frames is warranty. I thought £1k was a good price for a £2.8k frame (with custom paint and 1 piece handle bar).

Generally ebay is the wild west!

eBay is nothing compared to these freebie websites!

My parents still had my sisters old single bed at home, no longer needed, so to get rid of it quick they put it up on freecycle, the amount of people that expect you to deliver the bedframe, for free no less, to their house 20 miles away, after they finish work at 10pm, is amazing.

Ha I put a Kona hardtail frame on one. Tatty paint but no cracks or dents. I was asked for reams more photographs, countless questions and also asked if I'd drive to meet someone as they were driving a distance. In the end I skipped it. I do think people graze freecycle etc for items to sell on. Tight margins but they prey on peoples Goodwill to enable it to make it worthwhile.

I got mavic Kysrium wheels on mine but i gave them to the wife and got a set of cosmic aero's. Yeah mines a hi mod. knowing what i know now I would never buy another high end road bike brand new. the lads here in switzerland flip them after a couple of years of TLC. now some of them have their heads up their arses as regards to the value of the bike, but you still get lads who have a grip on reality and have heard of the german word for depreciation.

If you're on Facebook, see if there's a local cycling sales pages with guys who look like cyclists. Not kids selling BMXs or stolen Cube MTBs. I've had success both buying and selling locally to guys who actually want the stuff. You tend to get less lowballs too.

It can work both ways. I just purchased a used XTR rear mech off ebay listed as SGS (Long Cage). When it arrived it was the more common GS mid cage version.

When I queried it with the seller he said oh I didn't realize I just copied another advert. So I now have a mech I can't use, was partially fitted, and he expects me to pay return postage and hassle of wrapping it again & travel to post office to send it back to him!!!!!!!! Doh

The seller should pay for return postage - ask him to do so, or report it as an issue on eBay and they should sort it out for you. It's not your fault if the item was not as described.

In other news - FOURTH TIME LUCKY. A thoroughly nice, decent chap, a student at Oxford University, contacted me in advance to ask about the bike, arranged to inspect in person, turned up when he said he would, paid, and retrieved the bike. In return I made him a cup of coffee and gave him a lift to the station. He paid £50 more than Bellend #1. So, all round, a good result.

Personally I'd offer a partial refund though eBay. They make mechs in different lengths for a reason.

paypal will refund your postage for returns, if you give them a tracking number
