I'm an occasional mountain biker, and have always used flat pedals. I've just been given an unused pair of Specialized Body Geometry shoes.

I don't understand whether they support a clip/cleat system. It sounds like they have some metal in the sole because one rattles, but the outside of the sole is solid rubber.

Does anyone know what I have?

I bought a pair of cheap Specialized Cadets for commuting, they have a plastic/rubber rectangle on the sole that is strongly glued on, I had to cut it out with a Stanley knife to get access to the cleat bolt-holes. Could the oval bit be the same on yours?

EDIT: Yes, apparently that's it:

Once they're removed I think it would be tough to get them reattached though.

You’ll need to cut the block that has the S on it, be careful though it will be easy to nick the sole.

They might have come with a couple of bits of sticky backed plastic, much like a tyre boot. Take out the insole and stick one each over cleat retainer to keep the shoe waterproofish, then put the insole back in and fit your cleat.

Thanks everyone. Might have a go cutting the rubber off tomorrow.

Is this a standard cleat? Are they compatible with multiple brands of pedals?

Yup standard mtb pedal cleat, billed as mtb cleats. Your local bike shop or Halfords will have them as stock items.
