I rode a tiny part of the Velo South course on Sunday as I live local. The yellow signs were out advising about road closures around the Funtington area and the nimbies had sprayed NO on all of them! A few weeks ago I noticed a few signs protesting around the South Harting/Compton area. Not sure what they are moaning about as these are very quiet roads on a Sunday hence why it's a good cycling route.

With the exception of the ( small ) section of A29 that’s used, I hardly got passed by any traffic of note, when I reccy rode the route back in April, and that was on a Saturday, on open roads. If anything, this closed road event will make life easier for them, but I suspect this is more about petty, childish, anti cycling sentiment, than anything that actually might cause them real issues.Edited by GOATever on Sunday 23 September 15:36
Amber wind warning from the Met office for Sunday, now...
This has just been put on Twitter by Velo South....
As things stand the event is still going ahead but we will continue to monitor the situation closely as the weather forecast becomes more certain.
Please rest assured that the safety of riders, spectators and volunteers is our absolute priority and we will keep you up to date as things develop. We will issue a further update tomorrow via email, our social channels and on our event website.

I reckon that’s that then. I’m still going to ride the route anyway. This has just been put on Twitter by Velo South....

I imagine if that yellow warning stays in place they would have a real insurance problem with going ahead. They will presumably declare force majeure, pocket the cash and sail off into the sunset!
Yep.The wind was brutal when riding into it and the cross winds were interesting on occasion however I still managed 30 miles with most of the ride on top of The Downs so either I’m ‘well ‘ard’ or you can still cycle in the wind
I hope it goes ahead, too many people are looking forward to the event and believe it or not some of us locals are looking forward to cheering you on
I don't mind the conditions so much but I'd be nervous about riding in a varied bunch in gusty crosswinds. I'm down to n=1 at the moment and only have 65mm wheels for that too
I can't see how, but if they do decide to proceed I hope they can speed up the starting process. Those starting pens will be like emperor penguins, all trying to huddle up out of the wind.

I guess they have to make a final decision on Friday to give everyone (riders and organisers, marshalls) enough notice either way. If they announce that it is cancelled, even if the forecast changes for the better, they can’t change that decision can they. I wouldn’t like to call it....

It’s going to be a tough call for them. My wife mentioned yesterday one of the pit stops has been shut.
Apparently the group offering to help (Loxswood springs to mind but I could be wrong) were only being paid £150 to do the stop and had to provide volunteers to help as well.
The ‘Stop’ group have already raised £1500 for the group as a thank you.

Velo Birmingham last year had similar issues, the main one being the route which chopped and changed right up to the start.
The feed stations were poorly organised, the first was just a water and toilet stop, it took 15 mins to get in and out.
The second had run out of food, so I decamped like many others to a local garage and feasted on sandwiches and crisps.
The third was better, but the fourth was just before the big climb, so not best placed.
The route suffered tacks and on one section a disgruntled farmer went hedge trimming the night before to ensure it was puncture alley.
All in all, closed roads was good, but not “that” good, the best memory was riding through Bewdley with the crowds 5-10 deep.
I won’t be doing it again when it returns next year.
Overall it was a bit poor for the money

I did Velo Birmingham and really enjoyed it. Plenty of locals out supporting the cyclists including in the anti areas. I did,t stop at the first food station was too busy and I as in the flow. Second one was out of food, but thats mainly I guess due to the people at the front taking too much. The feed stations were poorly organised, the first was just a water and toilet stop, it took 15 mins to get in and out.

The more cyclists that use the local shops etc the better as gives more justification for the event.
Was signed up for the Velo South but had to pull out having broken my wrist.
