Are your tyres made in Japan or Taiwan? Have come across reports of “fake” panaracer tyres (mainly fire xc) which appear to come from Taiwan rather than japan.

Didn’t Planet X have some dealings with a dodgy batch of rims which were too big a while ago? They seem to be the Euro car parts of the bike world.

Rims were too small; Vision 30's. I've heard stories about buying stock...

Sorry chaps, but no further updates for now.

I've had a manky cold for several days now, and haven't felt inclined to make the Capt Oates trek out to the garage. Drifting snow was piled against the garage door anyway, and I knew that as soon as I pushed the button to open it, all the snow piled against it would fall inside! It's melting now though, and I feel a lot better so I'll be getting back out there soon.

Thanks for the tip on inflating a tube into the new tyres off the rim! Why I hadn't thought of that I don't know. I'm blaming this head cold though. I think that's the next step, measuring up the tyres against some that I know will fit the rims.

It's a shame really, because the tyres look really good. I love a tan/amber wall tyre, especially on an older bike. It just looks so 'right'.

And for anyone interested in the rest of the bike that spawned this sorry saga of the ill-fitting tyres? I started a thread about it here >>> https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I'd planned to be able to update the build cost on that thread with these new tyres, but this saga, along with the recent rancid weather, has set things back already...

Photos of the offending tyres, at last...

As you can see, there is no way that first bead is going in the well of the rim. That's with all of the slack pulled as far around as possible. For reference, that's a 700 x 23c Vittoria Zaffiro on the front wheel, fitted by hand, both beads and a tube. It required a little effort, but no levers, and no great drama. That was just one of three wheelsets I tried them on too.

Those Panaracers will have to go back I'm afraid, as even if I could force them on in the first place, I can't see any reliable way of getting them on and off in the event of a puncture or other issue.

frown

I'm currently back to using the 700 x 42c Conti Tour Rides, @ 990 grams per wheel for tyres with tubes. Heavy, and while they are pretty robust they have very a road biased tread pattern, so aren't very confidence-inspiring on riverside paths, gravel tracks, and fire roads, etc, which is the terrain I had in mind when I bought the bike. Those Panaracers were a claimed 300 grams apiece, and would have needed smaller, lighter tubes so a relatively cheap and easy weight saving of around 500 grams per wheel would have been achievable if only they'd fitted on the wheels...

Well. The whole sorry saga should be concluded soon.

Today I got this email...

Planet X returns department said:
Hi

We have received your returned items.

A refund has been processed back to your original method of payment.

Please allow 3-5 working days for the refund to show.

Kind Regards,

Returns Department
The ticket ID number was from the Warranty Department too, so my essay in the comments box of the returns form obviously got read. Just got to check my bank balance now to ensure they've processed the refund correctly.

I'm just annoyed with myself for not sending them back straight away. I chucked them behind the CD player in the kitchen, out of sight of my wife, then proceeded to forget all about them. I only just made the 28 day deadline for returns in the end. Posted them Saturday morning, first class, so 4 days to ship and process.

Anyone for a "What CX tyres?" thread???

wink

I've had a look locally. Not much of any use in Halfords or Decathlon. My nearest LBS has limited stock of CX tyres, there are a few more to try in nearby towns, but I might have to fall back on the internet giants again for this one...

Sorry to ignore your question! I'm sorry to say that in the end I didn't check the tyre carcass for further details on country of origin. They didn't fit, so in the end I just sent them back as they were of no use to me (nor to anyone else with a set of 700c/ETRTO 622 wheels, for that matter).
