its a great idea and you can end up with a fantastic bike indeed.

I purchased a '93 Raleigh DynaTec off Ebay for £26 quid delivered! Literally unbelievable. I think the guy selling it didn't know what it was. Will see if I can dig out a before and after pic

Granted it had no wheels, but I did a resto-mod (respray etc) and stuck a set of 60mm full carbons on it. It's my favourite bike by a long shot. Supple, compliant, still fairly light as the framing is so thin - and attractive to boot! Get lots of comments on it.

right im getting well up for this now.

I love the colour schemes of Raleigh and Peugeot from my youth.

But Ive seen a sun solo NR me anyone heard of them
I remember one of my mates had a Sun Solo while I was charging around on a Grifter :-)
I had a 5-speed Sun Solo in my early teens, late 80s must have been. Thought it was the nuts.

They are out there! The Panasonic/Weinmann colours date from the mid-ish 80’s and the bikes came in various specs from the Team Cadet which was cheapo “18/23” steel with low end components (although there are some Reynolds 501 versions about) to the Team Replica 12 which was lovely to mine which is an Ilkeston built “Services Des Courses” frame in 753. All flavours, huge differences in price. This Panasonic frames were what I lusted after as a kid and I was looking for the right one for a couple of years when this one turned up.

Cheapest and reasonable are Michelin Lithion 2, normally £15-18 each.

Veloflex Master are normally around £25 and are lovely tyres.

If you can get some Vittoria Corsa SC they're superb but will be hard to find.

Vittoria Corsa G+ are more like £35 each.

My 1992 Eddy Merckx, has a lovely ride but brakes are very poor as others have mentioned, also slower than modern bikes but still not bad.

Had a new one when they came out, sold it in error, but bought this last year.

Just been given this.

Two new tyres later and a cheapo saddle till I can find a nice leather Brookes one. Not sure of the year. I think it is mid 80's. Has a massive frame. I am 6ft 2 and there is zero clearance off the saddle!

I just need to figure out how to take the slack out the rear hub bearings and then go out for a spin.

I've got a Raleigh Kelloggs Pro Tour that I bought brand new ( used for school ) back in the mid-late 80's. Been sat for decades. Keep thinking about doing something with it. Unless you want to?

Here's mine, a 753 one. Less shiny than the one above. Bought just the frame years ago for £20! yikes Not sure the seller really knew what it was.
Anyway I built it up with some bike jumble bits as a summer commuter and it's ace!. It's all non standard but it does get a fair amount of use, and it's a very worthy bike in my collection. 8 Speed Sora/Tiagra. The frame is so springy and gives the smoothest ride of all my bikes, it actually makes a reasonable mild off roader just limited by tyre size, there isn't clearance for anything bigger than 28mm.

I thought I’d get maybe one reply to this thread.

Starting to see why people want 150 quid for a racer with a chipped / slight rust frame now

Lol

1985 Merckx Corsa Extra, Columbus SLX tubing.

A steel frameset with modern wheels, wider rubber and an STI groupset is a truly wonderful place to be.

£20 ! How have you got on with getting a wider hub in? Mine is 126mm at the back & I’ve been advised not to try & force a 130mm (modern hub) in there. Only a couple of mm either side but it’s a “no-no” apparently ..this was my plan at one stage & I fancied a modern Campagnolo groupset. 753 can’t be “cold set” so I’ve let it be. That said if it lets go & it’s cost you £20 it’s worth a punt ! Ilkeston (it’s got a SB frame number?) would sometimes use 531 rear ends on some frames as all the 753 stuff was bespoke & that’ll sprag quite easily.

You're correct, 753 is not "cold settable".

However, there's nothing stopping you getting a wheelbuilder to lace a wheelset with modern rims and a 126mm rear hub, then running 9 of 10 sprockets from a 10-speed cassette.

I know this will work with a Shimano setup, but Campy is a world of mystery for me!

Apologies OP for the thread drift.
