After really losing interest in cycling i've decided to build up a frameset that's been hanging about for ages. It's a Mason Bokeh and is currently slung together with Ultegra 11s Di2, Mason wheels. I want to swap it to a 1x and use the existing levers so my first question is can I use a medium XTR Di2 with the road levers? Newt up is the crankset. It's got a Chris Kind 24mm BB in there which is staying if possible, what's the best solution for a single 11s chainring? Gearing wise I am looking at as 40T front with 11-40 rear cassette.

The bike will be used for CX and messing about. n

Boardman’s current CXR 9.4 is Ultegra Di2 hydraulic levers with Deore XT Di2. Single chainring is an FSA SL-K. So I’d imagine what you want to do would work.

So, a few minutes on bike24 relieved me of £600. Bought pretty much everything bar the rear caliper adaptor to finish this bike off. XT Di2, 1x conversion with a 42T front, I have a Dura Ace crank from the old TT bike which will be perfect for this. The calipers are a bit salty and quite fancy some bling but i'll see how it goes. I'll be looking at 650b wheels I think for CX, in the meantime these will do. Planning on some 38-40 tyres and see how it goes.

Are you allowed either of 650b and 38/40mm tyres in cross?

Not in any national or regional championship, but local events are usually a bit more relaxed.

My local autumn series doesn't allow MTBs in (other than for the kids) but I don't think anyone checks anything else.

The UCI have dropped their permitted maximum tyre width from 35 mm to 33 mm. But I believe that rule was only for Elite races?

Anyway. CX and MTB event race organisers seem to make the rules regarding what bikes are allowed up on the fly sometimes. I raced the Battle On The Beach this year with drop bars on a converted hybrid bike. It's primarily billed as a MTB race, but tends to be won by a continental European "beach racer" on what amounts to a CX bike.

The same bike I raced that one on wouldn't be at all welcome at a local XC MTB race series, despite the fact that I regularly ride the courses they have/do use on that same "CX" drop-bar bike.

I don't enter CX races, but it seems that there's a similar thing going on with them, in so far as some allow MTBers to enter, but some insist on using narrower tyres and drop bars in the CX tradition.

All very confusing, and it's necessary these days to pour over the rules and entry requirements before you can decide a) if you have a bike that qualifies, and b) which bike it would be best to take.

The one "type" of bike missing from my 'fleet' at the moment is a true CX race bike really. I have the old Cannondale HeadShok thing that's been converted to drop bars, but it's not much of a racer really. Too heavy, too high geared for that. But there's no real point in getting a CX racer bought/built unless I'm going to enter races (or, I suppose, just to smash Strava segments!) - but having broken my leg quite badly this year I'm not sure I'll even race my MTB again right now, let alone taking up a new type of racing...
