Always wanted a Chopper but had a Grifter (second hand)

My claim to fame is that I managed to brake the frame of my Grifter.

Tomahawk (mini chopper) then grifter, then a burner then as the pocket money rolled in - a mongoose.

Turn your front mudguard inside out on the grifter to sound like a motorbike for a day, then wear a huge u shape hole in it. Grifter has than big foam seat that was ace for giving your mates backies,

Did anyone else have a horn that made machine gun, police and ray gun noises?

Can't remember gun noises, but do remember different sirens, and the one I had had a green horn, that was on my Striker.

I had a 2nd hand red Grifter, wanted a BMX, but was never allowed one (something to do with my constant and sudden growth spurts, I grew 6" in 6 months on average!!)

My claim to fame is that on the local BMX track, I crashed on the last 90 degree left hander, and stacked it, I snapped the crank axle! The frame didn't even get scratched.

Quite right no gun noises, it was brilliant though.

I had that siren thing on my light blue Grifter. Did anyone else’s Sturmey Archer gears slip between 2nd and 3rd, risking you whacking your balls on the stem?

With alarming regularity! I'm surprised my bits weren't permanently put out of action! laugh

Where as the chopper had that very dangerous gear leaver selector actually on the main part of the frame - just right for smashing your 'nads on...

Red Tomahawk then Green Stiker for me. I was tiny for my age. If memory serves me right there was also the Boxer which slotted in below the striker

I had that yellow siren on my striker. Also mine had the pedal back rear brake which was awesome for handbrake style skids.

Tomahawk Formula Three, then Raleigh Olympus racer with cow-horn handlebars and rubber grips. cool

Missed out on the Chopper by a couple of years then got the racer just before the 'made of lead' Grifter came out.

Re slipping sturmy archer you had to unscrew the little adjuster chain on it a bit at the back wheel to stop smashing your jewels, and have two red gear selecters to be extra cool : )
Purple mk2 Chopper £28.00 for my 10th birthday,
this was about a weeks worth of my dad's wage! I still have the tag and receipt.

I had the grifter XL, wanted a Burner but apparently they had sold out so had to make do with the grifter, and try and do bmx tricks on the old tank
