I'm thinking of trying one this year in Aberdeenshire (Cairn 'o mount) - been done from the steep side, but not the other side, although the steep side would probably suit me (and the prevailing wind conditions) much better, so may just do a repeat.

No real specific training (and no plans to specifically train for it, more a tweak my normal training), but I'm pretty comfortable climbing and the distance/time in the saddle doesn't scare me - it is a lot of vertical ascent, but from reading (and my own experiences of doing silly things on bikes) once you get past a certain point, everything is mental if you fuel/pace right.

My FTP is a bit lower than yours (265 @72kg) but i'm hoping it will be closer to 280 and me closer to 70kg by the summer to touch the magic 4 watt/kg.

My preparation so far consists of buying a steep, uncomfortable, heavy aero bike to replace my light, comfortable climbing bike - I wonder if it against the spirit of the rules to descend on a different bike you went up on?
Seems utterly pointless.

You going to have someone in a van ferrying the bikes about?

The whole Everesting thing by its definition is utterly pointless, no? Which is kind of the point? Do it because it's there and all that...

The comment might have been slightly tongue in cheek...

Well you never know, may have saved you a few minutes. (I don't think the rules preclude it).

Would possibly worth considering if you were going for a huge hill with low reps, but the Cairn is only 300ish meters vertical ascent, so anything gained by a bike swap would be cancelled out by GPS/bike swapping at each end and having to deal with the wife who already thinks the whole thing is a bit unhinged. The new bike is only heavy in that it is comfortably UCI legal (despite deep wheels and lots of unnecessary carbon aero bits), while the old one is borderline UCI legal and getting on a bit - there is only 2-300 grams in it.

Plus, even if it doesn't break the rules, it makes the whole thing a bit serious, whereas to me it isn't a race - the time doesn't matter at the end of the day.

Weather not looking great, but I'm almost certainly going to give this a crack Sunday. 10-12mph headwind and a 30% chance of rain....But I am very eager to just get this thing done now for various reasons. I plan to start approx 0500-0530. Going to be a long day!

One last shameless plug

Just got back from Sherpa duties, Ross was going well when I left him, 5 hours in and a third of the reps done. I didn't like his hill; busy, traffic lights at the bottom and a roundabout at the top. Steep too, then the gradient eases, but it is long and straight...and into the wind...

Check out my activity on Strava: https://strava.app.link/jOqqTUvN8U

Pieve of cask! Kind of! Headwind the whole day was brutsst times but I didn't find it as hard I anticipated.

So much support and thanks to Dave who popped along to help with some turns on the front!

I am aching a bit now lol!

It was a mental battle more than physical I think. I ended up doing 105 reps, 104 was enough.... But I wanted to make sure! I had so much support, I was absolutely overwhelmed! Had a PHer show for a while as well which was awesome biggrin

Saw a Lambo Huracan Performante with 3 reps to go which brightened me up somewhat!

One final cheeky plug

Amazing amount raised I'm very happy. I'm also glad I've got the day off work, and I went for a 5p/34 and 11-32. Although the 32 cassette will be coming off!

Great ride, I think someone from FCCC and FWCC (David Lunn) did a few reps with you.

What's next then?

Yes he did, plenty from FWCC (my club) joined me throughout the day which was a godsend.

Next - I'm not sure. I need 2, maybe 3 weeks to just unwind. I will still cycle, but not a huge amount. I've been working my arse off for 4-5 months now and mentally I need a short break, I've been doing 12-15+ hours per week on the bike now for months, one week being 19 hours.

Before my surgery I was a fairly decent runner, due to complications I couldn't run properly (due to a paralysed vocal cord, we aren't sure whether this is because of the surgery, or the ventilator/life support machine causing damage) but it obstructed my airway when upright and running....being stooped forwards on the bike meant it wasn't an issue....I may give running a little go, but I think cycling will certainly remain my main sport.

RE events or challenges, I have not a clue!

Yup, nice 650S! I also saw a Rolls Royce Dawn, too!

Thanks again for joining me, appreciated it a lot! Just ordered my "grey stripe" kit wink

No problem, it was nice to get out on different roads (even if I did get lost!) and be a (small) help. Well done, you've earned the grey stripe!
