Collective PH wisdom,

I'd like to replace my 2016 Trek Allant 7.4, because, well basically, I absolutely hate it. It's too heavy, and it somehow manages to be both twitchy and ponderous at the same time. And it has horrible fat tyres, 2 chainrings I will never use and geometry that causes me discomfort no matter how I adjust it.

What I do like about it is that it has room for mudguards and excellent hydraulic disc brakes.

My other commuter is completely the other way - a 2008 Cinelli Vigorelli fixed gear with flat bars. I absolutely love riding this bike, but it's no good for every day because hills and old-man-knees.

So what I think i want is a road-oriented bike that feels like the Vigorelli to ride, but has hydraulic discs and 1x10 or 1x11 gears. Flat bars would be a bonus. And I want to spend less (quite a bit less) than 2 grand. I'll build it if you can recommend the kit, but if there's a good OTP one then great.

Any recommendations?

Obvs Evans risk but 150 off with a skip bike, and models down the rung are available.

Similar, but cheaper:

I have one of these, now with 32c Gatorskins, full guards and a rack. (Curly bars, but still meeting some criteria, sort of.)

This could work, particularly if you can swap over the hydraulic brakes from your Trek.

In fact, could you not just get a 'racier' frame and swap over everything from the Allant with a singlespeed narrow/wide chainring...? By the sound of things it's pretty lightly-used.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Thanks all. Excellent suggestsions.

I've thought about buying a frame and building something. It's definitely a possibility.

I hadn't considered Alfine hubs - that is a good shout.
I had a Nexux 7 hub once and I didn't think it was all that good, but I always liked a Sturmey Archer.

Those BMCs look nice. I see that for 2k there's an 11 speed carbon fork variant which looks tempting.

I went and had a look at an Alpinechallenge 01 ONE at the weekend while I was in Paris. I think it will be my next bike when the UK gets some more stock and I get a cyclescheme voucher. No idea why it's not in any Evans shops until then...
