My new plaything to keep out in Madeira... Evil Insurgent MX (mullet). Absolutely awesome for the crazy steep and rocky trails out here. Already ditching the crap i9 rims to be replaced with EX511 rims (keeping the lovely i9 Hydra hubs), and fitted Code RSC brakes with 220mm/200mm HS2 E-bike rotors.

This means that my previous Madeira bike gets retired to UK duties (I'll bring it home when I finally fly back to the UK next month... I have a VERY forgiving wife who allows me to spend the entire winter hiding in Madeira). It is a 2020 Canyon Strive CF7.0. It was pretty much the only bike that I could get delivered to the island at the start of Covid. It has served me surprisingly well considering the riding out here, but over time, it has been somewhat tweaked to create a 'Super Strive', most definitely not as Canyon intended. Main mods are an over-stroked (265 rather than 260) RS SDU coil shock (replacing the air shock) upping the travel to 160mm out back, a 180mm air shaft in the Lyrik fork, a 10mm crown race spacer (giving another 0.5 degree of slackness), EX511 rims, tyre inserts front and back, Codes RSC's with 220mm/200mm HS2 rotors and a Renthal cockpit.

Not exactly an ideal configuration for 'trail bike loops', but should be fine for uplift days (I have a gravel bike for point-to-point 'anti-fatness' duties).

Looks great and I've never seen a wall mount like that one.

Think I need one...
Ta. Decided I’d put it the wrong way around so fixed that earlier & added the banner. Now I’m happy smile

Here’s the link. Simple, discreet & robust.

Excellent work! I'd wanted to post that it was the "wrong" way around when you put the first picture up, but I'm glad I didn't now. But it definitely looks better with the "business" side facing the viewer...

That was a brain fart by me. Since taking that picture, I’ve aligned The valve caps too….lol

I was comparing geometry and noticed it said this on the spec page for your frame; 215 x 63 AIR SHOCK ONLY

https://www.cotic.co.uk/product/rocket#compatibili...
Yeah I chose to ignore that as I can't figure out why they state so, there doesn't seem to be a reason for it that I can figure out.

The only real difference between an air can and a coil, other than the obvious, is that an air shock is much more progressive and a coil much more linear. The suspension design across all Cotic's are the same being droplink and so, as far is I can see, there's no difference to running a coil on this than there is to the coil that came on my RocketMax direct from Cotic. Plenty of other people run coils on older model Rockets too without issue.

Worse case scenario as far as I can see is I find out later down the line that the linear coil doesn't actually work as well as the CCDB air that was on it before and so I go back to running that. First impressions were good though, although admittedly brief, so we'll see....

Keep an eye on the rear triangle, I see Lewis Buchannon has just cracked his... Innocuous ride too.

I had the old version... Fantastic playful bike.

Yeah I was was surprised to see it, but thought it best to share just in case...I've seen plenty of photos on the web with others running coils on Rockets smile

I almost commented the same about Lewis', think it lasted him about 2, maybe 3 rides. There does seem to be a bit of luck of the drawer about it though and their warranty is super good apparently so I wouldn't worry.

Wasn't trying to scare... Simply advising to not ignore any creaks as that was an odd failure.

They've had an odd pattern of failures. Mine is 2016 IIRC and it's been bombproof and I'm a fat ****.

Is it possible the linkage geo is slightly different on the 'made for coil' frames to give the linkage a 'rising rate', air specific frames wouldn't have this obvs as air shocks are rising rate (progressive) anyway? If that is the case and you wanted to keep it a coiler you could get a custom spring im sure...

Yeah that's the only the reason I can think of for it but during the bit of riding I've done it feels very much like my coil supplied RocketMax so I'm not sure, more testing needed.

I'm actually quite enjoying playing about with stuff on this bike as I'm learning a lot about the difference between coil and air as well as frame geo and how linkages affect performance.

Like you say, I can get a custom, more progressive spring if I feel the need

Turned up earlier today. Only had time for an hours ride just now but it feels really quick whilst also pretty light for an aero bike.

Managed to average 34.3kph for just under 40km, which is very good going for me. Shame the weather is looking rubbish for the rest of the week.

Lovely. Swaying towards this model and wanted to see this colour combination in the flesh so thank you.

I must admit that had it been in stock, I would have ordered the black ‘stealth’ paint option. I’m really glad that it wasn’t available since the blue is lovely and really stands out.

Here’s a couple more pics in natural light to give you an idea of what it’s like in sunlight.

They’ve certainly made a good impression so far. The spec is great and it doesn’t feel like they’ve cut any corners to keep the price (reasonably) sensible. If any bike prices these days can be called sensible.

Only minor grumble is that the seatpost torque wrench was missing from the box. I can’t decide whether to ask them to send me one or just buy a better one myself.

I feel I've done all black with my Parlee and want some colour next so yours and the white and black Aeroad CF SLX appeal. Unsure whether I can switch back to Shimano after riding eTap for the past six years but the Ultegra is a good 300g lighter! I really fancy a aero bike with a clean cockpit so the Canyon is top of the current list.

Probably means selling this though frown

I'm lucky in that I have Fli Distrubution on my doorstep, only cost me about £400 those wheels, Pro 4's too!

Surely it doesn’t have to be an either or scenario. They can complement each other wink

That is a tasty looking steed.
