What if you have an aluminium frame and a carbon seatpost?
I don’t know very many people who have, but it’s still preferable to clamp the seat post. It’s more stable, and means more of the areas of the bike you may need to work on are accessible. Best practice ( as found in Cytech and the like ) is to clamp by the seat post.

They really are not a good idea with a carbon framed bike. Carbon framed bikes can take a bit of grief, they’re not made of glass, but it’s better not to cause any potential issues if you can avoid it.

That’s a service stand, not a work stand, they are designed to spread the clamping stresses.

That’s my bike clamped in a team edition Park Tools Professional workstand. It’s a relatively pricey bit of kit, but very good.

I think most canyon aluminium framed bikes have a carbon seat post, mine does.

I understand that it’s an issue for carbon frames, but surely a bit of a non problem for aluminium frames? Although I I suppose better access and stability are the benefit!

Just got this today. Now need to decide whether to go clipless, flat or a hybrid. Any thoughts appreciated, as haven't been mtb for a long while and the technologies have certainly changed.

Also if anyone in the SW/Somerset knows any good trails let me know.

4. Cornering - A little bit of confidence to build on this bike but seems on par with the last bikes Ive ridden but im not 100% convinced on the stock tyres. Likely switch to some CONTI's
Interesting! What did it come with? Im swopping out the Vittoria Rubino's that came with my 2020 Synapse for GP5000's. The Rubino's seem a tad harsh and don't have the stickiness or compliance of the GP5000's - my favourite tyres.

Very nice. I;d go flat for more confidence and less chance of injury and it's also supposed to avoid some bad habits you can pick up with SPDs.

The Quantocks and Exmoor are both great places to ride, lots of routes online.

Built this last week. Ridden it a couple of times now and it's my new favourite bike. Always wanted a Klein from MTBing BITD. The paint on it is fantastic and the photo really doesn't do it justice, it's a fade from white to a dark silver. It's certainly stiff and racey but not as punishing as I had feared. First ride out and it wasn't any slower than my 2019 Scott Foil in all its aero, disc braked, Di2 glory!

For reference it's a 2000 Klein Quantum Race frame. I've built it up with mechanical Ultegra, mostly 6800 but with 8000 cranks, Pro finishing kit and Giant SLR 0 wheels. I've of course kept the original Chris King headset it came with! Neo-retro you might say.

I took your advice after a wet ride today, so my bike was filthy again and needed cleaning. I clamped the seat post - the clamp just fits - but I found the bike to be less stable in that position.
I will try again another time and see how it goes.

Weird to spec Ultegra Rotors on a Dura Ace build. Other than that I think it looks good.

Ha! If one were to be picky the cranks are Cannondale's own, the cassette is ultegra, as is the chain. That's Cannondale for you but I got a hefty discount and Cannondale / 105 has served me well for over 22yrs for my road needs.

Nice work stand, and your advice is good, but aren't those cable-cutters just a tad "overkill"? scratchchin

I've got a Park Tools work stand (similar to, but not as snazzy as yours), but I'm never sure how to clamp my Emonda in it. It has no seat post, rather a carbon extension of the seat tube encased in a 'Seat Mast' which leaves very little space to clamp to, and obviously comes with the issue of the seat "post" and "mast" all being carbon fibre. I've tended to clamp the bike by the nose of the saddle when working on it. I keep the weight on the wheels unless I need the rear wheel off the ground for gear indexing. Not ideal, I imagine, and it has twisted the saddle rails slightly, but was the suggestion of my brother, a former bike mechanic turned policeman. No issues with any of my other bikes as they are all conventional metal seat posts in conventional metal seat tubes.

Nice. I just got a Canyon Hard Tail, and am having a play around East Hill, which is just outside Ottery, near Honiton in Devon.

Where are you based?

Another YT owner here :-) My new Izzo arrived last Tuesday .... had a few hours on some local bridalways Thursday before a decent ride up on the NY moors Saturday. Had work at 20 odd MPH among gravel and XC bikes but felt at home when the gradient started to point down ;-). Not had an MTB for a few years after spending the last 6/7 years on the road and my last bike was a 26" Enduro bike ... 29"r's just want to roll, so this feels a million miles away.

Some lovely bikes cropping up in this thread again - really liking the Goldfinger SuperSix - I was tempted for one of those when I bought my Tarmac and am now wishing that I had, it looks particularly good on those deep wheels!
