If I had the option, I'd personally take the roof bar/mechanically attached option, especially if it's cheaper.

The down side of the roof bar option is they are far more of a pain to fit/remove. So you are more likely to just leave them on all the time, which will reduce mpg and possibly create wind whistle, depending on the type fitted.

However there is loads of it on ebay and facebook market place to be had. Got my Thule roof bars, feet, fitting kit and 591 rack all for under £130.
If you find out the codes of the parts you need and search for them, instead of by car model, it can be quite cheap to purchase all the bits separately.

My highly practical vehicle. Bike does actually go in the boot if you remove the seatpost which is a bonus.

How do you find this rack to use? Any strain on the car or wobble with the bike?
I have the same one. Staggeringly good. Carbon roof flexes a little, and I position it so it has one suction cup on glass, but it's done 400+mile trips and been at a speed that would be immediate licence losing in the UK wink

Thanks, think I may have to purchase one
Best rack I've ever owned. Fit rack and bike in 2mins, removed even quicker.
Can you share details of this suction mount bike rack? Is it genuinely sturdy? I was looking for a full Thule system for 2 bikes and it's just getting pricey with the various add-ons.

This looks like an awesome alternative
It's a seasucker. They are great. I've done 2/300 mile trips at Motorway speed (and *cough* above), and it's rock solid. I aid rigidity by having one suction pad on the glass, two on the roof, which also means the bike is lower down for better aero/drag.

There are videos of NASCARs doing 200mph with them on the roof.

A lot of the pro teams now use them on their cars, but with full multi-bike racks.

Yes - the seasucker is pricey (although a lot less in the US if you are going over, that is what I did wink )

It is a doddle to fit though. Bike fits on in c30 secs. The pads take a similar time to fit on....and under 10secs to remove wink

I am sure there are some weird and wonderful vehicles on here being used to transport bikes around.

Even if it is just shoved in the back of a Mondeo, wheels on, post up your pics.
Oh the bitter irony.

After selling the Z4, to replace it with a more practical R32, I now find myself in the position of having sold the R32 for a more fuel efficient Mondeo, thanks to a new job that involves some commuting.
Whilst I don't have a photo, I can confirm the Nomad goes straight in the back, wheels on. laugh

Anybody got a Skoda Roomster that they use for carrying bikes?

With the rear seats folded down, is it possible to fit a bike in the back with it standing up and without taking the wheels off?

This "bike rack adapter" (detachable towbar) took a bit of finding, quite a bit of organising/cancellations (thanks COVID!), two ferry bookings (thanks P&O!) a trip to Germany and a billion quid.

good thread resurrection.

since my last post (with the Lancia and the Porsche), I've added another bike-carrier to the fleet, which can now be found heading up and down the mountains in Madeira. Super comfy and super practical.

2019 Fiesta EcoBoost

Ordered a GR86, thinking of keeping the Fiest as Ill have to fit ditch mounts to the GR86, plus it'll end up absolutely filthy like this has.

Our tandem inside the berlingo. We got the tandem with couplers fitted and it went in our old mondeo boot easily, then we got a berlingo a while back and havent used the couplers since. Its also great for solos inside too. Just take care to strap it down well.

I've just sold my Vito and we are thinking of trading in my wife's Focus for a multi use vehicle. We called in at a Dacia dealer last week to have a look at the Jogger, obviously not as much room as a van but it's not bad at all.
