A group of us are planning our next mini cycling holiday for April next year, there are a couple of choice Calpe or Malaga (we are looking to stay at Marbella)

I know Calpe is very popular even with the pros; but I fancy Malaga/Marbella for some reason.

Anyone been and stayed at Marbella? Feedback/routes/recommendations etc

With it being south of Spain, I guess the weather will be a little warmer than say Calpe or Mallorca? (We've done Mallorca a couple of times hence why we want to do something different)

Appreciate any info!

I stopped in Marbella for my 40th earlier in the year and can say you need to get into the mountains to get any decent rides in. Not sure how far you want to go, but have a ride up the hill from Puerto Banus, and head for Istan. From there, you can continue on to do a nice 100/120km loop of just have a cuppa in Istan and go nuts back down the hill ( great fun ). Try avoiding the weekend up there as it gets very busy with bikes.

If you want further info, feel free to PM.

Thanks!

Plan is to do around 300-400 miles over 5 days - a couple of big rides and a few steady rides.

I’m guessing road bikes?

If you use wahoo or garmin, and try do a ride along the coast ( to somewhere like Benalmadena ) it will try and take you on the front which is a rough sand covered path so not really ideal. Try and find some pre planned routes away from the main road as it isn’t a nice road to cycle on.

As said - try and get up into the mountains, but would recommend the Istan route and create a loop from there.

The climb up to Ronda from Puerto Banus is good fun, You really don't want to miss that!

I used to do a 100mile route that went Elviria-Marbella-Puerto Buenos-Ronda-El Burgo-Coin-Marbella-Elviria. Ronda to Coin goes through the Sierra Nieves which is beautiful. You definitely wouldn't want to do the Elviria-Marbella leg though!

Did Malaga this year for a few days. Though got pissed more than cycled. But plenty of options as soon as you head inland. Calpe isn’t all that special. It’s just near stuff and dirt cheap. Malaga you were able to get straight into the hills from the town without any grim main roads.
