interesting. And yes, it's exactly that i'm trying to avoid - that being said, I won't be reducing the weekend miles, even if the only thing I achieve is to complete it. That side of things is as much about the mental training as anything.

But, with my other training I do want it to be structured and helping the weekend ride become more enjoyable and of course increase performance on that ride.

Sadly the training plans offered on that article seem pretty expensive - especially if you pick the wrong one. But it's that what i'm after, I want the weekday training to be structured and actually give results rather than just knacker me out.

I think that's a bit of a silly article. Structured training is not for everyone. Isn't someone accumulating "junk miles" but having a nice time in the process, more likely to progress with their riding than someone trying to follow a strict training plan, staring at TrainerRoad, and obsessing over power zones?

Obviously there's room for a bit of both, but unless you're training for the 6 Days... JFRM

I think that for a rider looking to improve endurance, there's no such thing as 'junk miles' .

If; on the other hand, one is an athlete training for a specific event, then all the work needs to be focused and structured.

100 miles is not that though is it. Its just a long bike ride, that likely the OP could do tomorrow.

I've found that my FTP goes up with basically any cycling, as long as my CTL is growing. So I don't really buy that.

you've got more optimism than me hahaha, I struggle with 40/50. the thought of doing it twice scares me at the moment. I'm not looking to race 100, but getting it done before it gets dark would be nice.

15mph is what i'm aiming for over the 100miles so the training in reality is to ensure that's possible.

Don't think that's relevant on the amount of miles OP is doing. He won't have plateaued yet, so simply getting out and enjoying increasing the time spent in the saddle will tick the box in terms of increasing fitness, without detrimentally increasing the amount of faff required to align to a structured programme, or worry too much about what/how much breakfast he has.
