Also an import, we have a Honda Stepwagon. Takes bikes easily, lots of floor-to-ceiling height because the rear row folds up to the sides. Really happy with it, as reliable as you'd expect a simple petrol auto Honda to be, mechanical bits are a mix of that era Civic, Accord and CRV. Easy to find in budget, either the rounder 05-09 RG shape, or the earlier, boxier RF.

There are different classes of Japanese MPVs, at the top end are the likes of Elgrand, Alphard, Elysion etc - big engines, more luxurious, bigger footprint. The class below are worth looking at too - bit smaller, more economical engines (mostly 2.0), still really roomy inside. Look at Honda Stepwagon, Toyota Noah/Voxy, Nissan Serena, etc.

I don't understand the problem with a big estate and a tow bar mounted rack.

Exactly, live in a country full of scum bags, rather not give them the chance - or at least make it harder.

Or just buy a really stupidly large vehicle you don't actually need 98% of the time?! I like to think I would have brake-checked that robbing bd, but that's only going to damage your stuff and get you into trouble with the law, instead of him.

I think if we only bought what we actually "needed" the world would be a much better place - but, alas, we all like buying crap we don't "need" and this is one of those occasions - my "need" in this case is a way of me justifying another piece of crap. But hey, wouldn't life be bloody dull if we purely lived by our "needs"

Most racks have a locking mechanism - mine does. The clamp holding the top tube to to the rack is keyed so won't undo if you've locked it.
