That Stumpjumper is a handsome bike. Something about how the frame builders introduced the top bar rise around the mid-late 90's that make the bikes of that era look so right.
The sloping top tube. Yes, that is the point when MTBs became good looking and it has moved on to road bikes now as well.

I am assuming that it's at most a 17" frame, which will accentuate the sloping top tube - and maybe a longer fork than standard? I always associated Kona with that look. Not sure what it is with Kona these days, In the 90s they seemed quite well respected and had a bit of a USP with that frame geometry/design, and the P2 forks.

IIRC Kona was one of the earlier makers to do it. Many makes in smaller sizes sloped, but it then became a "must have".

Used to think that about sloping top tubes too. Back in the day they were the coolest feature. Weirdly now i love seeing a straight top tube as it represents the real kind of genesis era of mtbs.

First ride of the season today. Got it set up for urban riding - Schwalbe City Jet tyres, Fabric Scoop seat and Shimano PD pedals - works well for rough roads, cobbles, up and down pavements etc. Even got hold of a period Cannondale saddle bag to carry a first aid kit (out riding with my boy).

My goodness that’s a stunner.

Retro MTB are making a massive return to popularity, especially for the "gravel bike" conversions, people have realised rather than spending £1000's on a 'gravel bike' which is essentially a 80/90's rigid MTB, you can get a cool older geo bike

....but this has meant the bikes you use to see sticking out the skips in the street that no-one wanted, are now worth silly money!

Funny fashion isn't it

Pretty much a case of swapping stem for a short one, fit drop bars and brifters, done.

Lots of gravel bikes run 650b which is another way of saying 26".

I've got a Chas Roberts that was built for me in 1998/9. It has Pace suspension forks on it. If I am going to be on trend and have a gravel bike is that acceptable? wink

It’d be like bolting halfords tat on to a mk2 rs2000.

Thanks.

The comments re values are really on point, When I saw bikes like mine going for 2000+ dollars in the US I negotiated an agreed value with my insurance co for €2000. I suspect these will start to be a target for thieves as they were the first time round, They're a bit like classic Defenders.

My F1000 is nice to look at but in all fairness, I prefered the Marin Bear Valley I had before that. Cro-Moly is more forgiving than aluminium and I prefered the geometry. That said, I think I held on to the right bike. Just wish I'd also hung on to my mongoose Supergoose (got nicked in 1987 as it wasn't even locked!).

Are Kliens generally as stiff as Cannondales from the same era?

1989 Kona Explosif 19" - originally bought for £600 from Cookson Cycles in Whitefield.

Has been painted / stripped / resprayed / stripped and resprayed over the years and now converted to a SS. Built from bare frame up with stuff I had 'saved' over the years....

P2 forks, USE seatpost and original stem - chose not to put the Girvin Flexistem on though !

New decals with a slight modification ....

I watched some Youtube vids after I posted that. I have decided that it would be a foolish thing to do.

But today I have prepared the Roberts White Spider for use again this summer. Compared to my teenage son's modern hardtail it looks like a delicate little thing.
