I did put pics up on retrobike, but also put an ad for sale.

Likely dangerous but, erm, how much?

Got it up on ebay for 3,350 and a bit less on retrobike. Open to offers obviously

This popped up on FB Marketplace recently. Neglected and in need of rescuing the price dropped and dropped - until it dropped to a point I just couldn’t say no to.

So, this little hooligan came home last night (photo from the advert, not mine);

A 1999 Santa Cruz Super 8.1

It needs stripping and repainting plus decals, and a longer shock - it isn’t currently rideable as the shock grinds against the top tube. Annoyingly, I think to compensate, the previous owner has put some weird after market shock mount into it so I either need to find a new mount or have one made.

Not sure exactly what I’m going to do with it in terms of colour scheme etc. I’m thinking black with decals a red-orange fade decal to match the fork, but I remember Santa Cruz bikes of the day being lairy citrus colours so perhaps that would be more fitting. I also really fancy putting a 24” on the back for no real reason other than I think it suits it. On this one I’m thinking I’ll go down the route of ‘fun build’ rather than be hung up on being period-correct.

The Manitou X-vert carbon MRD forks are absolutely mega (and weigh a ton) but sadly need new stantions as both are worn (although no pitting) and of course new seals.

Other spec highlights include
Mavic D321 CD rims
MRP DS chain guide
XTR cranks

Spec lowlights
It has new XT brakes (which I’ll probably stick on my Yeti), some horrible white race face bars and stem.

Further than that I haven’t actually had time to inspect it properly yet.

It’s a 14” and I’m 5’ 11” so I can’t see I’ll ride it much, but these seem pretty rare now so I’m looking forward to giving it a new lease of life.

I’ll share some better pictures when I have them. The frame is comically over-built!

Seems CRC have found a batch of new old stock Bombers!

Everything from z5s down, all c. 2000 vintage.

Lordy, it's tempting!

Will this fit on my 1993 GT Tequester?

Probably, but you may need to change your stem and headset to suit a threadless steerer; if standard I expect your GT has a quill type stem and a 'headset'. I'm not 100% that the Tequesta in 1993 was 1 1/8th, somebody else here may know for sure.

It will also alter your geometry, as I'm pretty sure the Bomber will be significantly longer than your current fork, again if you're on the standard set up.

Wow. These take me right back.

Even a 'hardcore' fork only had 100mm travel! Not many with disc mounts either. Good times.

Shame these aren't in stock, they'd go really nicely on my 04 Heckler.

Big fan of this which came up on eBay for not much money a year ago. Late for me considering I was mainly a big Kona fan around 2000 but it’s doing a good job of meeting the very limited demands I make of it.

Just fitted new tyres, tubes & brake pads. Now discovered the pace elastomers are shot.

Other spec highlights include
Mavic D321 CD rims on I *think* Hope BULB hubs (but tbc on closer inspection)

Mega!

I had a red Super 8.1 which I don’t actually remember how I killed now. I remember the shock sharting itself at Ft William so I ended up having to race my hardtail with 6in twin crowns, but I don’t remember what ended the frame.

Stif were fantastic though and even though I was the second owner, helped me out with a semi-warranty replacement Super 8.2 frame in black.

Both were run with Stratos Superstar 8 inverted forks, which were frankly crap hehe

Me to, I distinctly remember the day I upgraded some Rockshox Indy C to Marazochi Bomber Z3 on my Saracen X-ess . Those Bombers redefined plushness for me and took some serious abuse which would have certainly killed the Indys!! The Z1s in orange were the fork to have back then but I think they were more than double the price of the Z3.

The other issue with the Z1 was extra travel messed with the geometry & added a bit too much stress on some bikes. One of my mates found that out the hard way after he fitted some triple clamp Bombers to his 99 GT Backwards and snapped the headtube off. It was a mega wipe out haha.

Quick update on the super 8;

I mocked up a new paint scheme

Drew up a new shock mount, which has now been machined (it’s been adapted from the original to spread the load better)

Took the frame for sand blasting and paint

Most of the contents of this bag is for the bin - chain, derailleur, cables, bars, stem, headset all junk. I’ve never seen a jockey wheel with no teeth left on it before.

And completely disregarded my paint scheme proposal when I spotted a Boost Blue Civic Type R parked up in Central

New decals for the frame and forks have arrived - I’m not 100% happy with them so will have a couple of decisions to make.

The frame is being sandblasted this week and then the shock mount plate needs to be welded up (one is cracked) and the shock mount test fitted.

Then it’s spray time. I’m travelling to the UK for September then I’ll be back here to do 3 weeks mandatory hotel quarantine when I get back. So I won’t see the frame again until November - by which time I hope to have found hope 6-pot brakes and 9spd XTR Mech and Shifter.

Nice.

Out of interest where did you get the decals from?

I have an idea for some new decals for my Canyon road bike, hence the question.

They’re actually from an eBay seller in Spain.

I can recommend Silk Graphics (https://www.slikgraphics.com/) from experience. No idea if they do custom but I’d have thought they would.

That blue isn’t a million miles away from the colour I had on my Super 8 a million years ago.
I’d have gone black with those forks though, or red and got some red Boxxer 151’s.

I wouldn’t put a 24” wheel on the back, I tried that in 2000 and it was terrible even back then laugh
