Any views on a fair selling price for this? c.2001 , Specialized Rockhopper ('Comp' maybe?); Deore groupset, Mavic rims, everything working perfectly as it should. c.£700 when new from what I remember

Great condition - as good as it looks in the pic - but probably not old enough to have 'retro' value?
Bought mine a[url]|https://thumbsnap.com/7WVA66QC[/url
Bought mine about 15 years ago £140 so any where between next to ....all n £200 if your in London?

I've spent time recently converting a Diamondback Wildtrack for use at work, inevitably there was eBay browsing involved and as I was in very much much a retro bike mood, I found myself searching for my first 'good bike' - a 1992 Raleigh Ravine.

Over the years a number have popped up for sale but generally they have been a bit tatty and many miles away, not really worthy of any sort further thought.

Then last week I happened upon an immaculate bike. After a few messages back & forth and quite frankly the exchange of FAR TOO MUCH money, I agreed to pick the bike up yesterday.

Wow. 30yrs after first owning one the memories and familiar sensations came flooding back. This will be a Sunday Best bike and one that I'm unlikely ever to part with.

Other than a refresh of cables it really does need very little work save for adjusting the headset.

I will upgrade the original tyres to something suitable for urban use - recommendations welcome for suitably good looking tyres.

I’m agonising over that far more than I should…

Billy Bonkers tread pattern looks great but I’m not a fan of the OTT branding.

Not sure what they came with but i’d go amber personally.

Almost definitely amber; I could be wrong but I don't remember many bikes before around 1994 coming with blackwalls.

Think this model was blackwall originally but i’d go amber personally.

Here's my old Dave Yates Diablo, which I restored during the 1st lockdown. I enjoyed riding it so much I did the sensible thing and bought a new(ish) carbon, full suspension bike. Wow, technology has moved on.

Still planning on using the Diablo on the South Downs later in the year.

Unfortunately, I'm looking to sell or get an idea of a price for my late friend's Specialized M2XX S-WORKS mountain bike.

I'm looking to sell on behalf of his widow, but I know that this is a vintage bike 1998 and I know that he waited a long time to get his hands on it but unsure how much he paid for it back in the day. Anyways, after he passed I took the bike with the intention to sell it for her when the weather improved - so here it is in all its glory.

Its quite upsetting as I'm torn in selling it or actually giving her the money to keep it for myself as a reminder of my mate but I really just don't know what is a reasonable price for it as I have seen you can get anywhere from £150-500 but I just don't know where best to price it.

Link to original spec ( I don't think there is much changed on it tbh):

Firstly, sorry for your loss - and chapeau for helping your mate's widow out.

Chrome is throwning up a warning for me opening that link - but a few thoughts:

Sworks are the bks. They've always put their all into those frames, and that's a bloody excellent example of the utter best of breed aluminium frame in great condition. It's "metal matrix composite" which was bloody clever, but damned expensive to make. They had a bit of an issue with frames cracking under hard use, but like most things it's a bit overblown.

I can see a mix of componentry, but that's how they did it at the time and all looks period correct - certainly the sort of kit I'd have expected stock for a 'top frame/medium spec' bike.

Pedals/mudguards/general pics give an impression of someone who had the money to get something top drawer, but who didn't ride it hard.

Personally, I'd pitch it at the upper end of that range, and if I had the cash spare I'd be offering you that right now as from what I can see it's in great condition and would take me right back to being a 16yo lusting after this sort of thing.

As a light duty trails/fun retro bike to ride, it's a bloody superb bit of kit (especially after a good service of the fork!).

I’d imagine the upper end of the range but i’d also suggest post it on retrobike.com and see what the folk on there suggest.
As previous poster suggested the S works original frames were MMC and expensive and therefore rare at the time. You do ‘t tend to see many for sale and this looks to have been preserved well so should appeal to an enthusiast.

thanks both (@Sway and @Fat hippo) for your best wishes and input I will post on retrobikes when I can.
Obviously, I'm hoping to get top dollar for my mates widow and I think if I pitch it to the right market then I should be able to get a decent price for her (rather than run the gauntlet of ebay, FB marketplace, etc.)

Any other sites suggested to post to? Back in the day when I was a big cyclist myself (now I'm just big frown ) I often used bikeradar and cyclechat....

I always had such a thing for Klein,

This was my collection 3 years back, i did sell 3 of these since.

It’s so weird seeing these Kleins nowadays. I remember when they came out, the frame tubing seemed massive and in your head it’s kind of stuck that way but now they look ‘normal’ size.

They were a sight to behold back in the day against a sea of really thin tube’d steel frame bikes.

@campo - there's definitely been some changes compared to stock.

Forks aren't triple clamps (although I'm wondering if that's a mistake as I'd never have expected triple clamps on that frame!).

Brake levers are deore (so '4th level', instead of top level xtr), and brakes look like they're LX (3rd tier). None of these changes really effect the performance in reality, however it will impact prices.

Rear mech looks (although pic quality isn't great on my phone) to be XTR, which is good!

Retro bike is probably your best bet, tbh I'm not the best person to comment on that!

Bit of a thread bump….

I accidentally bought this a few weeks back…. Nostalgia got the better of me rofl

All original, 1 owner from new. Not perfect but I didn’t expect that.

I’ve since changed the stem as the bar clamp wasn’t square to the axis of the stem, meaning the left bar end was slightly behind the right.

I’ve also sourced some period Wellgo pedals that are direct copies of the Shimano LXs of the time.

As an ex-Lotus Engineering employee is has some sentimental value, hence the purchase… I did have the chance in 1994 to buy one new, but a Orange Clockwork got the better of me (I posed that earlier in the thread wink)

That looks interesting, the Lotus, is that the original tyres? I would say the front wheel is on backwards looking at the tyre smile Cool bike, something to keep.

Yes, they’re the original tyres.

I haven’t checked them for direction indicators so will do & if necessary swap the tyre around (I prefer the QRs front and rear to be on the same side).
