Perfectly working drivetrain is satisfying... for 100miles (if you're lucky) and then you have to start again. I honestly hate it.

It is surprising that chains are still so dominant, behind all the boosterish marketing there is a lot of small c conservatism in bike design.

Carbon belts seem better in principle at least. I use one of those Park cleaning gadgets but really I don't think its practically possible to clean a dirty chain where it counts, internally. The wearing surfaces are between the pins and rollers and sloshing a bit of degreaser on the outside doesn't make much impression on them.

My chains seem to last around 6 months, however carefully or otherwise I clean them.

Keeping the muck off the outside does help the chain rings and cassette last a bit longer though.

Dealing with 2 motorbikes and 3 bicycles has really made me hate chains. The next motorbike I buy will be shaft driven, and I'm tempted to look into a rohloff & belt drive bicycle.
