So close yet so far smile

Couldn't quite manage to do at least 20 minutes of something on Peloton for the whole of Feb. Not sure if I can try to do the same for the whole of March, still totally subjectively all the strength work seems to be having an effect on the arms/shoulders etc. My resting HR is now consistently near the low 50s and occasionally high 40s marks versus mid 60s from before. Apart from right at the end of completing LEJOG 10 years ago I recon am the fittest I've ever been, so cannot really complain as am now officially in my 40s.

New aim is now to see if I can get to 15% body fat by the summer (currently 20%), not eating like a pig is clearly the most important bit, but Peloton certainly is helping.

Feb has been a bit of a breakthrough month for me…. After struggling with health issues for the best part of 8 months, I’m starting to see some real progress.

My last bloods at the end of jan showed everything is now back in range so I felt confident about stepping up frequency and intensity.

I also bit the bullet and started tracking my macros mid month, which has massively helped with energy levels - in a bid to shed the extra weight my thyroid problems had caused I just wasn’t eating enough… I’d lost a few KGs, but my metabolism had slowed, I had little energy and I wasn’t eating enough protein. I’m now eating at least 500 cals a day more, around 180g protein/day, and my weight is falling slightly.

Feb peloton stats
26 active days
35 rides
1,305 minutes
709km
13,700kj
14,545 calories
TSS over the 4 weeks has averaged 400/week.

My classes were a mix of 20/30 min HIITs, 60 min PZ endurance rides and 15 min low impacts (used as cool downs after the higher intensity classes.

I also did 15 weight sessions (45-60 mins) and I’m doing 10-15k steps every day.

Yesterday I did 400kj in 30 min for the 1st time since July last year (my PB is 458kj) - this was a massive mental barrier as there have been times when I’ve struggled to do 300 when physically at my worst.

I’m still a good way off my peak in spring/early summer 2021. My FTP in March 21 was 259 watts. At the time I weighed 82kg, so a bit over 3w/kg. I’m not sure I’m mentally ready to really attack an FTP yet, but I reckon I’m around 230-240.

Other fitness markers are improving too - my resting HR is 56 (it was 80 when I got my peloton 18 months ago), my ave HR when PZ training is half a zone lower than it was 2 months ago and my recovery time after hard efforts is improving.

I’m back in love with training again… it’s been a chore for at least the last 6 months, but I’m back to looking forward to getting on each day.

Well and truly into the year now, Spring is here but its still windy and not that warm in the real world. Back to commuting regularly on the eBike, but also managing to keep on going with all the stuff on Peloton, so averaging nearly 1hr a day of exercise which isn't considering how mad work is, and doing the school run all of last week smile.

My HR is also apparently now in the low 40s, I recon am the fittest I've been pretty much ever.

The results become their own motivation, don’t they?

I’ve still not got back to my peak of 10-12 months ago, but I continue to make good progress. Ive ridden 6 days a week for so far in March, running TSS of around 400/week. Output is up around 5% on Feb, but I still have a good 10% to go… today I averaged 237 watts in a 20 min tabata, which would give a theoretical FTP a bit overall 230… vs my FTP of 259 last March.

Also been disciplined with the weights - 3 sessions a week of around an hour each. I’m really starting to feel a difference now - on some exercises I’m using double the weight I could manage a couple of months ago. Had to buy some heavier dumbbells.

This, combined with 10-15k steps a day and continued diet tracking has got my weight down to 85kg (84.9 this morning biggrin) from a high of 92kg after Christmas. I’d like to drop another 4kg of fat to get below 20% but I’m not fussed if this takes another couple of months.

Here is me being quite happy that I got on the Peloton three times last week! You lot are machines! thumbup

I'm trying to get back into it again now, I got into a pretty decent routine with it for the whole of last year, but I didn't get on it in Jan or Feb this year though. March has started well for me(obviously not in comparison to you lot), and I hope to continue in that vein.

3 times will be more exercise than the vast majority of the population do!

October-December last year I was struggling to do 3 sessions a week…. And when I did get on it was miserable. But now my metabolism is close to normal again I have loads of motivation to get the numbers back… and to get rid of the belly before the summer starts…. Won’t be long before it’s warm enough to swim here… we’ve already had some days in the low 20’s.

Biggest issue for me now is avoiding doing too much! With the weather been nicer also commuting more on the eBike - which still gives a decent mild work out. According to Strava am needing to really watch how much cardio I do over the next few week. The result is my well on target to been the 'leanest' ever in my life. Not bad for something that dismissed by so some smile.

I wouldn’t worry. Even with accurate power data Strava interpretation of it is totally fascicle. Pretty tough to overtrain doing 45 minute spin classes I’d have thought. Unless you’re going as hard as you can every single time.

Doesn't the Strava 'effort' metric use HR data? In any case aiming to dip below 73kg by the end of the week. If I can manage that it'll be the lightest weight I've managed to hit ever in my adult life smile.

But the training load if you’re giving it power files will also factor which I think you are doing - based on weighted avg power

Hows everyone getting on?

Looks like I on average I spent 40 minutes every day in March doing something with Peloton. Interestingly I've spend more time on non bike stuff than the bike, though overall time spent on any bike (including the eBIke in the real world) accounted for roughly half the amount of exercise done.

Not sure how April will go yet, my legs though feel like they need a bigger rest from PZ rides. Will probably just stick to non-bike stuff on Peloton mainly as I will be commuting most days on the eBike.

I haven’t downloaded my March stats but overall l don’t think I’d be much different to February… maybe a bit less as I’ve had a lot of work on over the last week and only managed 5 days.

Still making progress thought - highs of 252 watts on a 15 min tabata, and 240 on a 20 min climb. Still riding minimum 6 days a week, weights 4 days a week. Weight down to 84kg (8kg down from jan)… I can get back in the skinny trousers again biggrin

Starting to notice plenty of pelotons on eBay/Facebook/gumtree. If I can get a highly discounted bike+, then I am in.

There are some on the peloton Facebook group… might be worth joining….it’s like anything fitness related, there a certain amount of drop out.

I wouldn’t be that bothered about getting a + unless the price difference to a regular bike is minimal. We have one of each, and the + isn’t worth the extra money for the very limited extra features.

As am discovering there is ALOT more to Peloton than just the bike. I've been doing strength staff for the last 3 months or so, and have had the bike now coming up to 12 months, yet half of my total works outs is now not bike related.

They seem to have introduced a new 'muscle map' on the app, clearly the aim is to get you to buy the new Guide camera......wouldn't be just yet but at 'only' £250ish I doubt I'll be able to resist for long!

The most important bit of all this ofcourse is results, by doing my strength work, and more importantly stopping eatting like a piggy, a weight of 70kg now seems within reach compared to nearly 80kg just after Xmas. If this was Bumble (or similar) I would happily post some 'torso' shots but we are all civilised here so you have to just take my word for it I've put on a reasonable amount muscle and lost fat smile.

For the price of entry, Peloton has absolutely got me fitter and healther.....next target is now to get defined abs at 40, not sure if that's possible, but why not give it a go!

FYI Peloton in the UK quietly dropped the prices of the bikes. I have a Bike+ on order and I pinged customer support who gave me a £350 refund as the bike hasn’t been delivered yet.

They dropped them further again! E.g. the £2700 everything Bike+ package is now 2350.

Quick Question for me in here and sorry if it has been asked before.

We got the email to say our years warrenty will be ending and we can obviously extend.

Has anyone done it ? Anyone not done it and regretted it ?

What is likely to go wrong?

There’s only 2 things that can really go wrong on a peloton… the flywheel bearing and the bottom bracket.

My bottom bracket need changing - it’s nearly 2 years old with around 800 rides and it’s started to creak at higher resistances (65+) out of the saddle (it’s still silent when seated and spinning).

It’s an odd sized part, not readily available and my bike is well out of warrantee…. Oh, and I shipped it to Spain anyway.

I explained this to Peloton and they have agreed to sell me a bottom bracket and ship it to a Uk address… my wife will then bring it over and I’ll change it myself (it’s not a difficult job and I can borrow most of the tool off a mate here).

I would image the flywheel bearing would be similar.
