Got finished a bit earlier than expected today, so jumped on for a quick 30mins of Ben Aldis ‘dance music’.

Realised it must be a landmark class for me when the side bar exploded with high 5’s as soon as I joined… checked at the end and it was my 600th ride (my 130th week of ownership).

Not a PB, but a good chunk more than I’ve been churning out over the last few months… sometimes you’re capable of more than you think if you just dig in and ignore the pain.

Of course it’s not 400 watts or 7w/kg, so it will be considered st by the usual suspects, but i’m near 56 years old, and massively fitter than I was when I retired 3.5 years ago… I’m super happy with my Peloton.

Pretty sure Gangzoom said his FTP was 230ish. Which would give him a zone 6 starting at c.280.

What’s the problem? Not everyone has 400 watt FTPs and peak outputs over 1k.
What’s the ftp mean (in peloton terms not file transfer protocol !)

It’s functional threshold power. In theory, the amount of power you can sustain for an hour. It’s normally measured at 95% of your 20 minute power.

In reality, most non-elite cyclists can only maintain their FTP for something like 30-50 minutes.

More than epic, in the top 5% of rides. Am normally just sneak into the top 30% which is fine by me.

Me neither??

I've always wanted to be an 'althelete' but I accepted a long long time ago I don't have the genes or the will power to be a 'pro' - mainly the gene. 15 years ago the best average speed over 10 miles on the road was 20mph, and I've never really bettered it, even with 2 eBikes 20mph average speed seems to be my limit smile.

What I do enjoy is exercise and cycling. But heading into mid age, doing a job that involves back to back Teams calls for 8hrs solid, keeping fit and not ending up with a 40 weeks gestation beer/wine belly was/is the main aim, as the beer pregnancy was 100% starting to be viable a couple of years ago!!

I don't go to the gym, I don't own a weight bench, I'm not part of any cycling club, I watch my diet, but I still drink/eat plenty. The Peloton bike + some Argos weights is all the exercise equipment I've used in the last 2 years, and so far heading into 40s my body is in better shape than ever.

Honestly I don't get this obsession with what my FTP 'should' be, but Peloton to me is worth every penny, and up there with EVs and eBikes as totally changing my outlook on how things can work in life.

It’s because it’s probably wrong.

230 watts for someone who trains often at your weight would be crazily low. I was merely asking if you’d tried any other power based bike. I get not everyone has talent and that’s fine, it isn’t a a dig or bait for me to bang on about those with higher numbers. Just merely an observation.

It’s true that, prior to the bike+, not all Pelotons were created equal.

As I’ve said before, I have access to 3 Pelotons and a gym bike. On 3 of those, my perceived effort at, say, a steady 200 watts, is the same, and I get similar average outputs over 30/45 mins… we have an original bike at our place in Spain, and a + at our UK property, so very easy to compare as the bikes feel the same and the class types are the same. My wife’s outputs confirm the same… she has 745 cycling classes across our 2 bikes and her sisters.

The 4th bike is my wife’s sisters Peloton. It’s a very early bike. I rode it a couple of times Christmas 2020, and averaged 266 watts over 45mins in a freezing cold garage… I reckon I could have managed well over 300 on a FTP test with proper preparation. At the time I’d been riding for around 4 months and my FTP, set on my own bike was 218.

I’ve also seen some crazy outputs on hotel bikes… middle aged women doing 320 watts for 30 mins, for example.

You hear much less about bikes being ‘hard’, but it’s not an impossibility.

The power figures displayed on these bikes seem optimistic to say the least. A few colleagues purchased these over lockdown and have low to middling 200+ watt FTPs. According to Peloton.
Having been encouraged by the numbers they started riding on the road, but couldn’t hold a wheel up even a minor rise in the road.
The riders they are with are only mid 200 watt FTP riders themselves, but the difference was night and day.

Me thinks the Peloton bikes may be calibrated to flatter the subscriber. Either that, or they were fibbing smile

I must be completely fked then because my FTP on the Peloton is low 200's and I'm nearly on my 400th ride. I'm riding 4-5times a week, 20-30-45mins, the average being 30mins.

My numbers do compare comparably with Gangzoom though....

How much time do you spend out of the saddle???

There’s something very odd about the power numbers from Peloton bikes. My brother in law’s tells him he has an FTP of 300 and he doesn’t. Not even close.

Whereas gangzoom’s (and other’s) numbers seem very low for the volume of training that they’re doing.

The anomalies certainly don’t all seem to be in the same direction.

For what it’s worth, without some regular longer, lower intensity rides, eg 2-3 hours plus, there’s a good chance you will plateau with your output.
The energy systems developed by consistently shorter, higher intensity rides, don’t necessarily develop the energy systems that allow a constant improvement in FTP.

Most people would be surprised just how much training takes place at relatively low effort levels, among elite endurance riders.

I see the good old FTP 'debate' from earlier in the thread is back, and no surprises on who keeps on going on about it smile.

Spent nearly 8hrs in solid back to back meetings today, which is what pays the bills for me versus FTP numbers. Just moved into temporary accommodation as the house extension has finally started, did the school run, and just finished bed time.

I'm not sure what other exercise regime/program/class etc could have motivated me to fit in a 45 minute PZ ride tonight, and have me looking fowards to the 90 minute session planned for Sunday. This isn't some one off thing, coming up to 2 years of ownership and in 2023 I've averaged some 40 minutes a day on the platform, fun/addictive/cult, call it what you like, more exercise of any kind is never a bad thing.

But now it's the weekend and time for something else enjoyable - It may be an Aldi special(we are suppose to be saving money for the house work) but Primitivo is always nice smile

To be fair, you do come across as a Peloton salesman at times smile

On the FTP side of things, it is just one measurement of fitness, but it’s easily measurable and comparable and that’s why it’s the core metric in Peloton, Zwift etc.
There have been plenty of successful athletes with lower FTP outputs than their competitors, but with exceptional 3-5 minute power outputs.

Anyway, good luck with the training smile

Things that work and work well deserve praise am not sure why that's a problem?

Here is me on my way to becoming a real life daddy pig as I approached my 40s.

1 year into my 40s (2 years after getting a Peloton) and am probably 1kg of fat loss away from a proper six pack, Peloton is the only excerise I do, no gym membership, no running/cycling clubs. Others can make up their own mind up about Peloton but for me, worth every single penny.

I got a blue tick and didn’t have to pay Twitter for it ! Not sure how/where I could lose it or what I need to do to keep it though.

Feedback - got the plus bike. It’s a nice piece of kit (so it should be for the money)

The ability to push the screen and have it adjust the resistance is nice. Not sure what else the plus got me.

Thank you to nordboy for the code. If anyone one is getting a bike and wants £200 off I also have a code now.
