Have a look at the Vitus Mythique VR.

It's a little more on the expensive side of your budge but based on reviews and first hand experience you're getting a full sus bike which based on the setup should arguably be priced a lot higher, it looks nice and they seem to hold their value pretty well if you decide to sell (especially if you sell in the summer).

You'll know your missus better than anyone on here and how likely she is to properly get into trail riding, if she is i'd say the Vitus is a perfect middle ground of being a bike to grow into but one that she's unlikely to grow out of anytime soon.

Sorry, is the question is it a lot of money in my opinion? I think that has been answered in my post that you quoted.

Of course it's all relative, hence it being my opinion.
