Club ride in preparation for Dirty Reiver in a month’s time.

28 miles of pure gravel around Alwen, Brenig and Clocaenog in N Wales.

Epic scenery and a glorious day to enjoy it!

Lovely weather in Wales, too, for a change smile

3 laps of Blue Scar at Afan today

Some of their section naming is slightly concerning for a noob wink

Not what you'd call an exciting background, but I was just so pleased to be able to get out in nice weather on my old steel bike for the first time this year.

Doing the Loch Ness Etape in a month so as much as I hate them, need to get some climbs in for training. Taking inspiration from Zwift, it was time for some runs to the transmitter tower.

Blackhill transmitter(s), source of the digital TV for the central belt in Scotland. Glasgow in the smog/haze in the distance.

Forrestburn hillclimb with the Shotts transmitter in the distance.

Daft question, maybe. But is that 'Afan' the same place I'd have known as 'Afan Argoed Country Park' as a kid? I'm pretty sure we went there to the Miners Museum with school, over the hill from Margam Park. I can't imagine there'd have been much in the way of MTBing there in the late 70s/early 80s though.

Second daft question. Does it cost to ride there? Or is it just parking that you pay for?

It might be worth me taking a peek at it either on the way to, or on the way back from Battle On The Beach next weekend. If I can make it work with family visits and the drive there and back, of course...

Yes, so long as it was a tiny miner's museum!
Just parking to pay for, £2.50 for 4 hours at the end I park which is great value in my book. Toilets and a tap, also a bike shop, the museum and an adventure playground if you have wife and kids to amuse while you're riding.
If you're along the M4 anyway, it is only 10 minutes or so up the valley. Big choice of trails but Blue Scar is the only one that suits me at the moment - the green+blue is disappointing and I'm not confident enough to try a red yet.

2 carparks/trailheads to choose from:

And just as well you mentioned BotB - I had it in my head that it was Easter weekend, I'd have missed it otherwise!

Had an off yesterday at Project 417;

Took a drop off and then went to carve a berm after and the front tire just folded, the rim dug in and it sent me flying head first into the floor.

On a previous run I’d rimmed out on a root at a fair speed. I think this must’ve some how poked a spoke through my rim tape or a tiny stone in my rim/when poked a hole in the rim tape and given me a slow puncture.

I found this when I took the tire off;

No idea if a rim can compress and put a spoke through the rim tape or if that stone stuck in there was what pierced it.
Either way I cracked the foam on my helmet so was an expensive day!

First off that sucks.

Secondly, the spokes/rims wouldn't move enough to go through the rim tape. chances are you burped the tyre on the root earlier and lost a tiny amount of pressure then when you were railing the berm you rolled the tyre and hit the ejector seat function.

Well, it's been a while! DVT in the leg last year, then all sorts of complications, then COVID for the past 10 days....

Anyway, I had a 20 mins on the turbo last night to check everything works, then finally got out on the bike today for 10km - a kind of urban gravel explore around Carshalton / Beddington / Hackbridge for those that know the area.

The ulterior motive is - I wanted to check the old steed was OK, before I take it to my Mum's place on the Isle of Mull, and leave it there for holiday rides, so I can justify getting a new gravel-ish bike back home.......I'm now browsing the Ribble Bike Builder!

Happy cycling everyone...

A dull day but my workmate got an On-one the same as mine so we went out with a couple of others for a few miles.
They are great bikes for the money, the componentry is worth the money alone before you take into account the carbon frame and forks.
Mines the crème egg scheme

Joined a local (small) group ride today. Somewhat off-piste around the Welsh woods.

It was all going well...

...until it wasn't!

Stupid little roll-able drop, only 18 inches to 2 foot max... according to the guy watching, I'd pretty much cleared it, then hesitated slightly looking at the next bit and "gravity took over"... all I knew was the bike chucked me over the front and I now have a very sore shoulder irked
