Does anyone have any views on what is good in the up to £1000 bracket. I’m not interested in the Peloton/Echelon interactive stuff but it will need the usual ‘gym’ stuff to track progress etc and not a turbo trainer as no interest in an actual bike (unless it has an engine 😉)

All advice appreciated, thanks

Buy an Elite Suito they are now in stock, shops have just had deliveries, plus a cheapo bike to stick on it. Then get a Subscription to Zwift and Bobs your Mothers Brother. I’m ignoring your suggestion about not getting an actual bike because it’s not a good idea and as you’re asking for advice I thought I’d prefer some proper advice. All this will cost you less than a Grand.

Simple to use, has all the connectivity you might want in the future, plenty of adjustment to the saddle height and bars. You can fit your own saddle. Might have to wait a while for one though, or pay overs to get one now.

A second hand road bike and a decent turbo trainer?

Undoubtedly I am missing the point...

Cheers fellas, road bike and trainer doesn’t work as I want this for me and my wife. I’m 6’2” and she’s 5’ so a road bike will be a compromise and it’s a waste as neither of us intend to actually ride on the road. My wife has arthritic fingers so can’t really hold the bars and I prefer my bikes with engines biggrin

I’ve got a clothes horse exercise bike and you really need a lot of self discipline to use it regularly.

Of course if the 2 of you are encouraging each other it might be better but speaking for myself it’s soul destroying boredom.

I bought a second hand Keiser M3 on eBay a couple of years or so ago. It was about £500. It had been used in a gym so is a little shabby but it is mechanically sound and does the job.

Exercise bikes are pretty soul destroying but it is a useful option when the weather is unremittingly grim. I have it set up in front of an old TV so I watch box sets as I’m pedalling (currently rewatching season 3 of Buffy).

What's available locally on FB or Gumtree?

If you can find something with a power meter and a heart rate monitor you can at least track your progress.

"I used to average 280 Watts for 30 minutes with an average heart rate of 140 bpm, but now I'm managing 320 Watts in the same conditions."

It doesn't matter whether it's calibrated, it's just helpful to see your progress.
