Hello from ALA Insurance, one of PistonHeads’ long-term partners biggrin

For those of you that don’t already know us, we've worked with PH for over 6 years offering members discounts and advice on GAP insurance, Scratch & Dent, Keycare and Warranties on the motor side of things, however we now also offer Cycle insurance too.

So, as we have done with GAP for the last few years (on this thread over in General Gassing) we thought it’d be helpful to have one of our customer support team on hand here to answer your questions on Cycle insurance too. This could be anything from simply 'Why should I consider Cycle insurance?' to 'Where on earth do I find the bike frame number?!'

Our policies include cover for theft of or damage to your bike, along with optional add-ons such as personal accident, cycle rescue, legal expenses and cover for any accessories. If you're lucky enough to be able to go abroad at the moment(!) we can even extend this to worldwide cover for you as well.

We’re a company that takes pride in offering excellent customer service. We won’t be using the forum to push you into purchasing a policy from us (and I'm pretty sure we wouldn't last that long here if we did). Our aim with this is to give unbiased information on Cycle insurance generally, as we know with insurance a lot of questions can come up.

If you need anything just drop me a line, I’m happy to help!

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Katie,

I have bikes in various places (US / HK / UK). You mention worldwide cover, is there a way I can cover these with you? Or even just the ones I travel with / ride most often? I'm from UK but currently based in Hong Kong.

If my being based in HK is a barrier, could I have them insured by someone in the UK on a worldwide policy?

Thanks!

Hi keith2.2

Thanks for getting in touch!

I'm going to give you a few details initially and if these raise any other questions, please feel free to reply to me on here or on an email (katie@ala.co.uk).

You mention you live in Hong Kong, and have bikes in HK, the US and also the UK.

Our underwriters will only offer policies to UK residents; if you have a permanent home address in the UK, we should be able to cover the bike or bikes you keep in the UK. We can also include worldwide cover for the UK bike/s if you would take them abroad at any point, up to a maximum of 30 days at a time.

With the worldwide cover, if your bikes in the US and HK are permanently kept there, we wouldn't be able to cover them unfortunately. As mentioned, the worldwide cover is only for a bike kept in the UK and taken abroad for up to 30 days.

We also wouldn’t be able to put the policies in some else's name as the bike proof of purchase and the policyholder's name have to match.

I hope this info is useful! Please drop me a line if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Katie

When you have nine bikes in the household, a bike by bike policy sure adds up...
