I’m looking at buying a new wheel set for my full suspension bike however I’ve no idea what rims to get.

Budget is ~£500 for the wheel set & I want a set of Hope Pro4s.

(I know better hubs are available but for the money I think they’re ace. I’ve had a set of Pro2s for around 10 years and they’re still perfect.)

Currently got some 29” DT Swiss 502s 32hole 30mm inner width mounted to some crappy formula hubs & the rear hubs on its way out.

I managed to flat spot the rear rim at bike park wales so using existing rims to build a new wheel is out. It’s not awful damage but if I’m going to the effort I may as well replace it.

I mainly ride red trails and the better I’m getting at riding the tougher trails I’m riding.
I’m 90kgs and ride quite hard.

I can’t seem to find much info on rims, most reviews are for wheels sets and focus on the Hubs.

Pretty certain I want ally (don’t think my budget would stretch to carbon anyway)

If anyone has any recommendations or anywhere they’d recommend to buy from that would be great.

I’ve never built a wheels set but I’m pretty handy with Spanners so I’m not adverse to giving it a go. However it doesn’t seem to save much if any money just opens options a little more.

Either mavic or stan's Enduro rims.

I know you like Hope, butbI wouldn't ignore second hand.

I picked up a set of utterly fantastic zipp 3zero moto wheels for 900 quid off pink bike.

You'll like get something like a hunt carbon enduro wheel set second hand for 500 quid. Also a fantastic wheelset. I have a set on my Enduro bike.

I’m open to second hand there was a set of Stans flow mk3 on eBay with hope hubs for £350 I was watching & I’ve had a look on pink bike just didn’t know what rims to go for.
However they’ve sold since starting this thread.

I can get a set of Stans EX3s on hope hubs for £490 new so that’s an option.

DT EX511... fit and forget.

I am circa 95kgs and run them on my enduro bike out in Madeira... no problems at all.

Hope Pro 4's on both my bikes, the 27.5 hard tail is Hope Fortus 30 rims too, been good. Survived Rim Dinger at BPW! Stans Flow on my full sus mullet also survived all BPW could offer. I'm 118kgs.

Only thing with the fortus rim is that as a wheelset they're well over 2kg. (hair under 2.5kg).

My Geometron came with a set and I took them off after one ride. They're just too heavy - I'm similar weight to you and the hunt carbons (at 1800g) also survived BPW including rim Dinger.

Hunt wheels. Mine have lasted well even when missing a few spokes for a while.
Hubs are fine. Last a while, serviceable and make a good noise. I don't miss having Hope hubs...

If you're deadset on Hope hubs get them built onto DT EX511

Thanks for all the replies.

Having a look at the suggestions and I think I might go with the EX511s on some pro4s.

I like the look of the ex3s but they seem pretty heavy the mk4 Flows are a fair chunk lighter & the ex511s are inbetween.

Reviews on them (forums rather than journalists) seem to be good too.
Just waiting on a refund from a cancelled bike order and I’ll order them.

If it wouldn't cost me an extra ~£70 to covert them to microspline I'd have already bought a set of these.

I don’t think you can go wrong with 511’s on Hope hubs. My local bike shop specializes in wheel builds and I think that’s one of the most common combos they sell to the MTB crowd around here as they are pretty bomb proof. EX471 is another good option if you don’t mind going down to 25mm inner width as they are a bit lighter but still strong. I have a pair, which are now my spare wheels, but they were on my hardtail for a while and shrugged off a lot of abuse.

+1 for hunts too. I had a set of enduro wide, should have gone trailwide really. Super strong, hub engagement is awesome too. Coming from someone who has used hope hubs for over 15 years.

I'm currently running some Santa Cruz/Reserve 30's, a set of Hunt Trail Wide, and some DT Swiss 240S on Light bicycle wheel sets and I have to say the Hunts just get the job done. They're never going to win you likes on Instagram, but for the money they're amazing.

The bike I'm taking to the Alps on Saturday has the SC/Reserve wheels on it, because reasons, but I don't think they'll out perform the Hunts that will be staying in the garage.

A little under budget (which admittedly is not very PH) but I have a near new Hope Fortus 30 wheelset looking for a new home..

Silver boost hubs with XD driver if that might work?
