I have done a Google search but couldn't find the exact scenario or help.

I work for a company which has two manufacturing sites about five miles apart. Quite a few of us cycle to work. And then a subset of the cyclists sometimes need to visit both sites in one day.

For myself this happens perhaps once a month. I can usually plan my days but occasionally I need to visit the other site unexpectably.

There are three people in similar positions. Unfortunately in the last five weeks we have all fallen off our bikes on our commutes/ leisure and so the boss has asked us to stop cycling between sites whilst on 'business'. Similar to business car insurance, is there something for 'business' cyclists that is not for Deliveroo type outfits?

I don't mind paying for this personally, although maybe work should pay?

By boss, do you mean the person for whom you work and report into? If so, they've specifically asked you to stop cycling between premises, not find insurance to cover you whilst you continue to do so. Or, am I missing something?

I’m not sure what you’re trying to actually insure against here..

Yep person who I report to, who is the COO. Not missing anything, hence why I am looking for suggestions.

I'd be telling him that I won't be going in future then.

How would you get there if you couldn't drive?
Will he be providing company transport?

If you drive in your own car, will you have business cover on your car insurance?

A cycling accident happening whilst on company business, so potentially company liability. If I was off work for 6 months due to a cycling accident between the two sites, who is paying my wage/ hospital bills.

A bit like an accident whilst driving your own car on company business.

Yep I have business insurance on my car and on planned days of being at both sites I usually take the car.

I think if I can find an insurer to cover this liability, then work would pay anyway.

They arent anti cycling as they have funded at least 5 e bikes in the last 18 months (only 50 employees). What they are worried about is 'what happens if.....'

I think the recent spate of accidents has bought it into focus.

Being proactive I am seeking a solution, rather than sitting back grumbling about it.

But...he's told you to stop doing it, not find a solution to keep doing it.

That's why your boss has asked you to stop doing it. Just adhere to his request.

You are very obedient. I enjoy cycling.

I understand why the request has been made as evidenced in my post. I have told my boss I will look for a solution. So far, no one seems to have a solution. I might just phone my home insurance and see if they offer anything - but I suspect this is a bit specific for them......

Sounds like the business needs some 'Keyman' insurance for the off chance you become unavailable.

The broker for the business insurance should be aware of something that fits the bill - covers replacement of key staff etc in that kind of circumstance

It is easier for the company to say don’t cycle any more.

Do as they ask, might need to ask for a car to be provided but they may just put you in a taxi.

It might be worth talking to British Cycling:

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/thirdpartyliabil...

From your description, you’re commuting between two work sites (which is covered), rather than running a cycle courier business (which isn’t).

Good luck (I use my bike to cycle to various sites wherever possible)!
