Rear hub or front? My wife has decided that she now wants to convert her existing bike, but I am a tad confused on the battery voltage...and power.

This is her bike.
I would not run a front hub motor on those forks, they will just take the load / torque

fit a torque arm whatever you do, it will save the motor spindle spinning in the drop outs. The drop outs aren't designed to take a turning force

So I measured the wheel, sent of for the YOSE kit and arrived and something looked wrong......the wheel! its too small. I measured the actual wheel, the rim.....I think the seller measures the wheel/rim AND tyre.................

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124320160966

The actual wheel here measures about 24" Mt wheel /rim is exactly 26" and with the tyre about 28"....

What went wrong

26" wheels are available in different sizes, it is listed as 559 which is the common 26", you will need to look at your existing tyre and look for the etrto code.

Your looking for something like 40x559, you saying yours is 28" that to me suggests yours is 700c in which case you will find a number that is 622

I asked earlier about converting my wife's Bird Aeris to electric, so thought id update on what we did, or in this case didn't do!

I spoke with one of the suppliers of kits to check before making a purchase, but we had to discount converting the bike due to -
  • Concerns with a hub mount motor using a chainring that would foul on the chainstay.
  • The bike has Boost Maxle bolts holding the wheels on which would preclude the use of wheel contained motors.
  • Issues with mounting the battery pack, given we had a small frame bike.
Now the most ardent bike mechanic might have found a way around these but im not that mechanically minded and it would have resulted in strife from the wife if it didnt work and wasted money.

In the end we sold the Bird bike and the wife bought a Specialized Levo which she loves.

Send it back and ask for a 700c kit

Or buy the wife a used 26" wheel bike, loads on Gumtree

And the kit has arrived and one look at the brakes and arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggh.

the Shimano brakes have the geal levers all built in and the kit just a sensor and brake cable. The combined brake and gear change stuff is all in 1 molded plazzy block, theres bno way It can be seperated so.....am kind of stuck ......until I have to do something drastic unless anyone out there sees a better solution???

You need something like this depending on what sort of plug you have for the brake levers or how confident you are fitting new plugs. After all its just 2 wires.

Ditch the front derailleur, leave chain on middle chainring, ditch the left shifter/brake lever, fit new left brake lever with sensor.

You don't HAVE to have two brake levers with sensors.

You don't need three chainrings when you have an electric motor.

Alternatively fit a Shimano 3 speed revoshift on the left.

This does seem to be a solution as the gear leavers would remain. Bit unclear where to put the magnet/sensor??????

Again TY. food for thought there....sort of same price for the sensors and would leave the right hand gear change alone as thats for the rear wheel which she probably uses more! 7 gears....
So i could just take of and tape up the 3 gear shift, (the pedals change) and fit the actual Yose brake lever and just see how she manages like that BUT if she deffo wants those 3 gears, fit the shimano 3 gear change....
NOW as I cant fit the battery on the crossbar, I am looking for a rear rack that can fit these pigging big batteries....Plenty of the slim ones for the rectangular batteries around...

Alternatively fit Revoshifters to both left and right side (they are cheap on eBay) then she gets to keep all her gears and you can fit both brake levers from your kit.

Revoshifters are not popular amongst hardcore cyclists and are used mostly on kids/budget bikes but I have them and they work fine, but I am just a leisure cyclist.

Just put the magnet on the lever and the sensor on the body of the lever gear change thingy. I glue mine with 2 part resin glue about 2 years ago. I put mine on the underside so I can't see them, unless I crash smile

And would balance nicely ....aesthetically... as well....Must make sure i get the right hand and left ones correct!!!
