When I think about it the only part not swapped out are the callipers so I’m thinking that’s the next thing to try. I may try copper slip on the back of the pads.
The callipers are dry no fluid leaks but I bet I’ve spent more on discs and pads than the cost of new callipers

Update - i had a set of nothing special OEM wheels off my summer Cannondale in the shed so i swapped the front wheel and the wailing went. PX in all fairness sent me a set of new discs. Yet to fit as been away for 2 weeks - the actual diameter of the PX discs (sram) is 14mm, the cannondale discs are 18mm (shimano) and even just on my street i can feel more stopping power. Cheaper bike, cheaper components i get but the noise was unacceptable....

I had a similar problem years ago. Tried all of the above. Guy in the local shop told me to turn the disc around. It cured the problem! Now before anyone kicks off, I know they have arrows on them and they are designed to run a certain way but it worked and is still working, probably 10 years on and still no excessive noise.

I couldn't get mine to stop squealing with the original pads (sintered). I tried organic pads but they weren't the black and white solution I'd hoped for, so I tried ceramics. People advised me against them (can't remember why now) but they're not expensive so I gave them a go and they've been the very best pads I've ever had. They're quiet when wet or dry, they grab instantly, and they don't seem to wear any worse than the sintered pads that I had struggled with for such a long time.

Did you change the discs? Shimano are marked resin pad only so I would be interested if you are running resin discs

Sorry for late reply - I missed this.

No, didn't change the disks but I always clean them with Wynn's Carburettor Cleaner every time I put new pads in.

The reason the disks are marked as such is because sintered pads wear the disk more than others but that wouldn't stop me from trying alternatives. Ceramics don't seem any harsher than resins IME. Not had to change a disk yet and I'm on my 3rd set of pads.

I’ll check my discs and see if they take metallic pads

I think XT/ultegra level or above discs are fine for sintered pads. Something to do with the way they are heat treated iirc.

SLX discs are fine for metallic/sintered pads too, its only the lowest spec Shimano discs (RT54 I think, often oem specced on low to mid-range bikes) that say resin only.

I found that out the hard way a few years back, luckily it was the rear wheel and not the front.

I tried a few different pad compounds on my GT Grade 105 gravel bike due to the noise with the OEM pads, in the end I contacted the bike shop I bought it from and they sent out some pads that had mass on them in the form of heatsinks and that stopped the squealing.

I'm currently using wiggle's cheap organic 'lifeline' compatible shimano pads on another road bike which had a squealing disk brake and it seems to have cured the issue, just had a look for them but sadly their website has gone to pot since the redesign so can't find them.

I too have always suffered noisy brakes on my.bike. I can manage to get them quiet for a few hundred miles but the noise always comes back. Had the bike 15 years and have tried everything with little success. Anyhow thought turn the disks round and see what happens. Well I didn't die smile I am now a few hundred miles in and no noise at all, evan down the 3/4 mile 10% downhill to my house. Can't believe the fix was so simple. Thanks for the tip.
