I saw ebikes worth 10k. It is like walking round London with a Rolex. Nick the bike could sell for 2k in minutes. I think anyone buying 10k ebikes needs to give their head a wobble.
No we need to be able to ride a 10k bike, wear a watch, carry a laptop etc without the fear of being robbed or stabbed for it. Surely it’s those buying £10k e-bikes for £2k that need criticism?
A very simple way to stop a lot of this is to a) encourage people to register their bikes on BikeRegister and b) legislate so that you can only list bikes on eBay (or similar sites) that have been checked on BikeRegister.
By doing this, you force the selling of stolen bikes off the legit market and remove a big portion of the customer base for the scum who steal bikes.

Better recording and cross referencing bike Frame No's is a no-brainer to me. Ditto components with serial numbers, which have lead to convictions before now. The police, bike shops, owners, should at a minimum be all over it like a rash. Followed as you say, legislation for it to be mandatory for eBay etc.
That said, it wouldn't stop those who are buying £10k bikes for £2k because that's happening under the radar by people who know what there buying, probably to use for drug dealing etc.

Not to mention nutters like me who roll around on £14k road bikes that don't even have a motor! Scabutz said:
What rig do you have? My most expensive is a Cervelo P3 with Ultegra DI2, some way off 14k mind
MY23 Pinarello Dogma F with Dura Ace 9270. Exact same spec as Ineos Grenadiers are riding this year. No, it doesn't make me as fast as Tom Pidcock.
Also an additional set of Zipp 404 wheels that I swap between that and my new Specialized Diverge Pro gravel bike.
I have a Wilier with Sram Red too. And a Trek Madone SLR w/Ultegra. And a KTM Scarp Sonic MTB.
I prefer bikes to cars...
Nice bikes are, well, nice. They feel special. My Dogma F is set up with a very aggressive geometry so not a long distance endurance tourer but so sharp and suits my riding style.
Is it worth the money? Not if a performance edge is expected for all but the very best Pro's. I'm no quicker on it than my Wilier or Trek and still get destroyed by my Coach on his £5k bike. I do enjoy riding it though.

Looks too uncomfortable for them to ride!
I've done 100miles on it and it is ok but would prefer an endurance set up for longer days. My gravel bike is a bike that would be great for long rides. High-end racing bikes are aggressive and it's true that many who buy them don't appreciate that unless you are pretty fit and flexible, they will be uncomfortable.

My bike was free. I was walking home one day, and it was leaning again some bins. I knocked on the door and a fat, woman said it was her sons but he'd only ridden it twice, in 8 years, and she needed the space. Take it.
Tyres had zero wear. Paint had some surface rust.
There was no seat or seat post.
I've priced it up. Only £180 new.

I gave away 4 MTB bikes in perfect working order just 3 months ago. Serviced them and then offered them to some local kids. Free & Gratis. Each new was probably £200-£400. Weren't being used. Probably isn't the best bike mentioned in the thread however?I'm all for cost effective I've got some more basic bikes too. But I don't expect you would win your local enduro race, or pour yourself down a black run at the Alps, on said bike? Horses for courses.

If im buying a push bike for 10k I'm putting GPS tracking on the thing.
You definitely ain't a cyclist. GPS units weigh a fking tonne :-)Apple AirTag and Tile are very manageable and would also fit inside the seat tube.
You can also near field microchip then, same technology as uses in dogs and cats, connected to a database with you name and address etc.
