Hans Rey! Remember his exploits being in MBUK a lot. Normally some sort of crazy jump/drop off.

That kind of hardcore stuff is a lot more normal now.

He's doing a tour next year (I think) visiting theatres talking about his riding. I saw him just before covid and it was really interesting, especially seeing all the pictures of his kit/bikes from the 90's that I was envious at the time.

He was still riding a GT last time I saw him.

GT might be more common in the USA, they sponsor a few other well known riders too like Phil Kmetz.

I think Ellsworth are still going but in a much smaller capacity, from what I understand they just do small numbers of frames made to order now.

Going back to GT, they've always had a place in my heart since owning an Aggresor hardtail then an I-Drive fully but their bikes do nothing for me these days. They do have one of my favourite riders on their team though, Brage Vestavik. Guys mental and encompasses everything I love about bikes as he's just in it for the craic, rides fast, goes big, steezy AF and just does what he wants. Him dropping off Jah Drop recently was nuts!

The mad Viking? For a big lad, he's phenomenal on a bike, although I did wince at him wiping out on the huge step down at Hardline a couple of years ago. Looked like that one hurt a bit.

I had an Agressor too, loved that bike. I went into Halfords to buy a pump & walked out with a GT. No regrets.

EWS is an awesome sport. As a televisual spectacle, it's boring. WRC on two wheels at 15mph. I've tried & tried to get into it but it just can't hold my interest. That & it's where DH guys go to die.
Totally agree.

The idea is brilliant, it’s great from a participant point of view but it doesn’t work from a visual or spectator point of view. It’s big, spread out to work well.

DH works well from a streaming point of view.

That’s another blast from the past!

At one point they made some great looking bikes but I recall the later ones getting a bit ugly.

Because of this thread I found myself looking through some NPS results etc.

Can I throw in;
Rotwild
Brooklyn
Sintesi
Jamis
(Dare I post it…) Muddy Fox

Yep, that's him, I'd love to see him at more events like that, Hardline and Darkfest etc.

Latching on to the EWS stuff, enduro is great to race but st from a spectator POV, I just don't care about watching it or keeping up with the results.

A Sintensi Bazooka with Mr T’s was the height of cool when I was 13.

Nigel Paige on his Rotwild turned up at one of our local riding spots when I was a teen.

Brooklyn were always pretty special things and nothing something that you’d see very often.

Jamis are still kicking about through the likes of Evans.

I watch a few youtube vids from some EWS riders, Jesse Melamed etc - the speed of those top level riders is mindblowing at times.

Years ago I raced a top pro who was in training down a rooted gully long descent in Les Arcs. I think my time was close to a minute off his in the end. I have my excuses why.

It wasn't even close.

The only time it gripped me was 2021(?) when it Richie Rude & Jack Moir battled it out with often a just second in it on stage after stage.

On the speed thing, Ben Cathro put up a Pinkbike racing video yesterday making the point that the top DH riders come in all shapes & sizes & so the physical prowess side of it is just a base level, winning & losing is a head game.

Years ago out in Alp D'Huez a few days before the Mega I was following my mates down a trail, I thought I was shifting until Danny Hart came whipping past completely off line over what I can only describe as a boulder field!

Knocked me down a fair few pegs that did!

Young Danny used to join us on our Tues / Thursday night pedals. He used to do that to us too... Often on a hardtail laugh

We were in Morzine many moons ago with some guys who were sponsored by the shop I worked in. They were quick or at least we thought they were until Sam Blenkinsop came past us…jeez, that was another level of fast. Insane.

I was in Les Gets back in around 2006, when we saw Brendan Fairclough sat at the top of a section. We all stopped, as did a lot of other riders. No one seemed to want to go in front of him (he stood out a fair bit with Fairclough writtten on his back). He eventually went as everyone watched. The section was nothing special but he pulled a manual off a wooden northshore type thing into an effortless two wheel drift round a flat corner. That was the first pro rider I had seen and it was unbelievable really how good he managed to look on such a tame piece of track.
