Question for you guys that are running a single chain ring on the front with no form of chain guide/tensioner, how does your chain not flick off all the time?
I
Most half decent rear mechs these days have a clutch to tension the chain and that is good enough for most people who don't do hardcore downhill.I

Cheers! The rear mech has a clutch to stop it moving about when not shifting and the front chainring has narrow wide teeth to match up with the chain links and provide better grip. It's at the point now where a chain guide is more often a hindrance because I get so few dropped chains. Much easier to once in a blue moon pop the chain back on than have it clogged with mud every time I go out. I race occasionally and only ever use one in the Alps, but even then I doubt it's usefulness.Question for you guys that are running a single chain ring on the front with no form of chain guide/tensioner, how does your chain not flick off all the time?

GT RTS-3 with a few changes such as magura hydraulic rim brakes and odyssey shark bites, dave's chain device and lots of mint sauce stickers
...oh and a giro switchblade helmet

Sweet - all the must haves from about 1994! Don't forget the club roosts and the Judys. All its missing is a titanium flight seat! I so wanted one of these when I was younger. One of my dream bikes. The LTS never did it for me in the same way. Have you thought about finding some spins?GT RTS-3 with a few changes such as magura hydraulic rim brakes and odyssey shark bites, dave's chain device and lots of mint sauce stickers

Missed this. Very cool. Tidied up the commuter a bit.
I love riding it. Doesn't half mess with your head swapping between fixed and freewheel all the time though.
I needed a reliable and easy-to-use bike to commute on after breaking the frame on my old steel road bike (See other thread!). I went and looked at a few different bikes, bottom-of-the-range Giant/Treks mostly, all around the £180-250 mark. The Sora/Claris gears are a bit of a turn-off and the lack of basic maintenance was a worry with all of them, with rust all over the place.
I ended up driving as far as Leicester from Birmingham to look at this one advertised on PinkBike. It is in great condition. It's a 2011 Scott Speedster S30. It has a 3x9(!) Tiagra gearset with a 105 rear derailleur, cost £210. I raised the saddle, changed the pedals to SPD and I think its good to go.

Thanks for that. The chainguide getting clogged up with mud is one my main frustrations hence I've been thinking of dropping it,plus the roller is getting on a bit and causing a bit of drag!ajstephe said:

Pretty happy with it. Now just need some more Rapha Kit!
I was looking at the canyon site yesterday, will they sell me a bike but without wheels?

It looks worse than it is. It's a Fabric Tri:I actually find it quite comfortable and since this was a budget build, I didn't want to spend huge amounts

They will sell you the frame. Took about a week for it to arrive (it was shown as in stock) I had all the other components to stick on it such as the groupset, wheels. Frame comes with the seat post and 'cockpit'
It is the Ultimate CF SLX 'Mechanical' frameset

Hi dude - thats so random, check my following post. Hope all well at work It is the Ultimate CF SLX 'Mechanical' frameset
https://www.canyon.com/en-gb/road/ultimate/f-ultim...
Well, after almost a year of mucking about and researching everything available to replace my every day, all year round ride, it finally arrived today. I haven't ridden it yet and stumbled at the fact there is no front wheel quick release, but I think I assembled it correctly. It will be lovely to now have an all year round, do it all bike that is Carbon as well as Disc equipped. I didn't want to outbike my De Rosa so this is about practicality and comfort for my long commutes. Further down the road I will be looking at an Aeroad, but not a for a couple of years as the Rosa has plenty of life left in it and not much to be gained by changing it yet.
Can't wait to rack up the miles as this one is definitely a keeper.
