Started to wonder whether I couldn't pick a cheap utility up for not a great deal more than the cost of a deluxe bike rack for my MX5

It would have to be reliable and obviously have space for the bike and cheap isnurance (the curse of being under 25!) beyond that anything else is a bonus. Strictly under £1000, preferably more like a couple of hundred. I'd only really use it for carting stuff around and maybe if I was in between cars.

Do you think it's realistic - maybe a Mazda 323 or Nissan Sunny?

A van is the most convenient way. Cheap Astravan or similar would be ideal.

Astra Vans are pretty poo for bikes because the roof is too low to fit bikes in whole.

Bikes will however, go in escort vans or citroen berlingos.

But I'm still not impressed you've bottled it. I want to see bikes ziptied to the roll bar on the 5

A few of the lads I ride with run old Clios.....

This is 6 20" and 1 26" in the back, and there was still room for 2 people in the front. rotate

Check the insurance on vans before buying one they can sometimes be a lot more expensive than you'd expect, something to do with theft from them and people have crashes with people in the back, the estate car the van is based on can sometimes be a lot lot cheaper to insure.

Astra and Escort vans are ideal, and fit perfectly with the front wheel removed.

You don't want to put them in complete anyway when these are so cheap:

Haha, well I think I'll still end up concluding the best solution is a bike rack, but just wondered what people will say! Can't really afford anything half decent as a second car to the '5, but there again, a decent bike rack for one is like £150. That's a fair proportion of the cost of a Citroen ZX or something.

For sake of argument, let's assume I do get something - not so keen on the idea of a van and presumably they're fairly expensive? The option of bolting some rear seats back in every so often might be good too.

Realistically, do you think that 150quid is half the price of a car? When you have to insure it, 6 months tax is nearly a ton, an MOT is 45 IF it passes, and if you can get a car for £150 that passes first time your a genius...

Safest option for a is the towbar, minus towball, plus a rack. sorted.

For using the MX-5, Snotrag's right again.

The bike racks that attach to tow bars are the best that you can buy, and are far more secure than the type that goes onto the bootlid.

I had a fiesta courier to put my bikes in you can fit 3 bikes with 6"+ travel so they would fit most bikes in height wise. You can pick the vans up for around £600 and seen to be bullit proof...

LOL. I bought a 1.4 205 with 6months tax & 12months MOT for £150. Ideal for my bike as I dont care about getting it dirty! And its fun to drive evil

I used to use a K reg cavalier, back seats were permantly down, my large bike used to fit in whole, didn't care how mucky the boot got from the bike

Only one possible answer... get an old Defender!

That way, if it's absolutely vile weather by the time you get to your riding venue (eg, it's in Wales) you can still go offroading, just without getting cold and wet!

I thought of a defender, but a useable example with an MOT and a fighting chance of making it to the next MOT is not a cheap as chips purchase unfortunately.

While it lacks the looks and go anywhere appeal of the Defender, an early Disco can be picked up a lot cheaper, and will be a little "less bad" on a motorway towards your favourite moor and valley.

I'm a straw chewing farm boy original, so a defender would suit me perfectly

.....if someone else was paying.

I know £150 doesn't cover the tax etc, but it does also give me something to put a guitar amp/more than one passenger/a weeks worth of camping gear in when needs dictate!!

Probably won't, but just mulling it over - I'll probably have my MG (saloon) for a while longer at this rate anyway! Brought my bike into work today (for a ride later) with that virtually whole in the boot. The silly strut brace thing just prevents you from putting more than one in on top of eachother which isn't great for trips off to Wales.
