As a 34 year old who grew up riding freestyle in the 80's (DP freestyler), worshipping Eddie Fiola and Bob Haro- am I too old to start riding a BMX again?

I now have a nice road bike, a nice mountain bike so i'm looking at a BMX circa £250-300.

Question is, can I pull it off, or will I look stupid? I'm not planning on riding far, just messing about on the street.

Thoughts?

I am 35 (same age as Matt Hoffman), and i ride a BMX regularly, they are great fun and quick to mess around on, help your riding skills when you are on a MTB in the woods later.

You can pick up some great BMX complete bikes new for your budget, more choice than you believe.

Will you look stupid, No i do not think so, i do not care how i look on it.
You get the odd comment and surprised look.

ideal bike when out with my kids, i can chuck it down if one of my kids falls off their bike and needs rescueing.

Don't think anyone who can ride is too old for a BMW.

Personally I'm tempted by a trials MTB, which is half way there. I'm a lousy street rider too.

34 and never really stopped riding BMX. smile
Flirted with MTB's, rode 24" BMX for a few years but always had a 20" in the stable, now back on 20"
Had a good fall just over a year ago, screws in the leg to prove it from a slam riding park, but everythings back in place and I'm back out riding again.
As long as you can still ride to a acceptable standard I can't see the problem, I mainly ride with a group of lads I can give a good 10 years to and I like surprising them with some old school stuff, and theres no better feeling than making it through a good set of trails even if you're just happy to clear them when everyone else is twisting the last set. rotate
Depending how big you are the only problem with most off the shelf pre-builts is the frame size, there aren't many 21" frames about. But venture up to the local spot and someones usually selling an old ride or eBay is good for bargins, got my Kink Freebird off there a few years ago.

Local trails on the 24" a few years ago.......

One of these.....

Spotted one on eBay a few weeks ago going for a song and had to have it, think they are out of production now though. The website has them listed but if you go to the home page it redirects you to the new site. confused

Incidentally, George (the guy who started G-Sport) is knocking on a bit himself now wink

I've been riding BMX for about 18 years - I've just turned 30. Most of my heroes growing up are still riding - Miron, Hoffman, Taj Mihelich, Ron Kimler, Ron Wilkerson, John Taylor, Jamie Bestwick and so on and they're all older than me.

One of the guys I ride with is 42, and while he looks a bit weird that's for reasons other than his age...

Yeap, used to ride the Sheffield jams he and Chris Hardy would organise, or disorganise as was usually the case.
Used to ride with Bestwick quite often before he moved to the states, he hails from Ripley in Derbyshire about 10 minutes from where I still am, he always was far to good for his own good, glad he's made it big, he's a nice bloke, and his miss's is quite fit too. wink

Hah, small world - I'm good mates with Chris Hardy, used to ride with him alot both here and in the US. Haven't spoken to him for a while though. I used to knock about with George and Waddy a fair bit too, back in the old ReHab (Wakefield) days...

The name Waddy rings a bell, think I used to race against him back in my racing days, saw them all one year at Southsea and seem to remember one of our crowd doing a deal with him regarding a pair of bars and a handfull of Porn mags. paperbag
Remember Chris and George organising a Sheffield jam and having nowhere for about 50 riders to sleep, think they ended up dumping them in a multistory carpark, while they went back to their gaff, we dumped our bikes with them and went crusing Sheff in my mates Jag, pulled some tarts and slept in the car outside Chris's place. hehe

yankcrime ?! if i told you i ride a zima frame do you know who this is :bow

funny where you bump into people on the net lol

i think i can guess who the 42 year old is !

i think 30 plus can bring a very useful old skool skill set to the modern day riders who will not have these quality moves.

ride till you cant ride anymore

Ha ha, been joking with my missus that I'd like a BMX too (late 30's).

Also laughed recently at E.T., the chase scene on the BMX's, gang of kids trying desperately to get away from the authorities, still had the time to do that 80's 'back-wheel-flick' thing when going over jumps... great stuff. laugh

I'm 42, dont really try many tricks but its great to thrash about on , picking kids up from school, dog walking etc. Its main use is as a portable seat down the skatepark whilst my 9 year old rips it up. Great fun.

lol, this takes me back,im 30 now, back when i was about 14 we used to ride rom skatepark every weekend, get the train from rayleigh, one day the train was cancelled ane we ended up riding to shenfield to get a train out to rom, lol, what a day!!
started off with a giant, thn built my self a haro freestyle, and moved to another hand built up by me looptail pk ripper, was gold, bought as frame&forks, striped to bare alloy, polished like mad,and built up,had gold arayas, mini renthal bars, quick relase mx brakes and matching levers, maxi cross 3 piece crank,dk(?)stem,so long ago i cant remeber it all, anyway, rode for a while, and was nicked outside mcdonalds in southend highstreet, was only in 2mins if that!
reckon it was some clubber, using it as an easy way to the club, and to thnk how long it took to build, and what thier worth now!!
Used to have loads of fun in them days, ive moved now to sussex, but wouldnt mind getting back into it one day,i bought myself a cheap halfords bmx,but its no where near the same, altho i can still do the old kickouts etc lol!
