As a mad keen cyclist, having just got out of hospital i can say its not how fit you are, its just the way the cards are handed out.
It would appear i got dvt, its travelled through my veins and finshed up lodging in the back of my eye.
Symptoms, going blind in one eye, pain as its gone through my shoulder, and a lot of other stranger things. All in about two weeks.
Apparently made worse because of a 30ish bpm resting heart rate, thick blood and sitting on a bike for hours.
I had to have an emergency mri and ultra sound on my body.Because the veins in my body were very large it didn't stop lower but send bits everywhere in my head....blocking my eye vein.
Scared the hell out of me, but at least i now might be able to see myself bleed to death from the medicine i'm on that stops blood clotting.Rat poison i'm informed.MTB is now halted for about 3-6 months frown

yikes

Glad you are on the mend, but can't imagine how scary and painful that must be to go through.

It's little consolation, but at least when you do get on your bike in a few months time, summer will officially be well underway thumbup

Was the DVT brought on from a plane journey?

Not brought on by flight, just happened, could be many reasons i'm told.Sticky blood been the most common, not pumped around at high speed when i'm sat down. The tech name is a PE, but this was a rare example showing up first in my eye.
I never knew so many young people die of dvt, without ever getting in the air.You are 85% greater risk if you fit than unfit because a PE will travel through the body and kill you, rather than block you leg and you go to hospital.
I was penciled in for a three day race this weekend but ended up rolling a 29er wheelchair at about walking speed down hallways, pushed by an old bloke <feeling sorry for ones self> sorry for the whine.

Strewth! yikes
Glad you're on the mend.
I don't understand how "sitting on a bike for hours" could be a contributory factor to dvt though... thought you only got that from being still such as the oft mentioned long haul aircraft journey where you do sweet fa for hours, rather than pedaling like buggery and getting physically exhausted scratchchin

Pulmonary embolism.

Lucky break there. The first my mother in law knew of hers was when it killed her.

Get well soon & dream of the summer to come (hoping it won't suit Noah like last year's!)

Sorry to hear of your misfortune and wish you a speedy recovery.

Hopefully before your discharge you were given plenty of information (both verbally and written) about warfarin, ie INR and regular blood tests, diet, alcohol consumption, additional medication etc. Yes it is rat poison, but in much bigger doses than you will be getting, alongside regular follow-ups you should get a review in about 6 months time to see if its necessary to continue with the treatment.
Feel free to ask any questions - or go see a pharmacist in the hospital you were treated at.
